IWC Doppel Posted December 6, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have experimented a few times with the 35mm frame with a Summicron 35mm and it seems to take a very generous picture more like a 30/32 than 35 ? Am I doing something wrong or is it this far out ?!?
Advertisement Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Hi IWC Doppel, Take a look here Viewfinder accuracy. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted December 6, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 6, 2011 M8? Probably about right, because the frames are set to be accurate at closest focusing distance. That way, at closest distance, you get what you see in the finder, and progressively more than the finder shows as you move to greater distances. M8.2 frames are set IIRC to be accurate at a distance of 2 m. That means that at closer distances you get less in the image than shows in the finder, and at greater distances more than you see in the finder frames. WestMichigan Posted December 6, 2011 Share #3 Posted December 6, 2011 Well, there are multiple variables in play here IWC Doppel. The viewfinder windows in rangefinder cameras only offer a certain level of framing accuracy to begin with. On an operational basis, the more experience you have with the viewfinder in your camera, generally speaking, the more accurate you become composing with with the framelines. The next thing is: The accuracy of those frame lines is optomized to be most accurate at a specific distance from the camera. Further away and closer in from that specific distance cuts into the accuracy of the framelines when composing an image. The third thing is: Not all lenses of a given focal length have the same field of view. This means three different 28mm lenses - different manufacturers, different generations from same maker, etc, etc - can't be counted on to give exactly interachangeable images when switching amongst them. The net effect being that the framelines in a rangefinder camera are, at best, approximations of what the sensor is seeing when you take any particular image. (substitute film for sensor if you happen to go out shooting with a film camera). I have experimented a few times with the 35mm frame with a Summicron 35mm and it seems to take a very generous picture more like a 30/32 than 35 ? Am I doing something wrong or is it this far out ?!? Guest #12 Posted December 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted December 7, 2011 Well, there are multiple variables in play here ... parallax compensation is also less than perfect, so the framellines can be in the wrong place as well as the wrong size.

jevidon Posted January 13, 2012 Share #6 Posted January 13, 2012 Keep your composition inside the frame lines and crop if needed in post processing.
