stickyfingers Posted February 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys I'm trying to buy a Leica for a friend - a film Leica camera. However, I'm torn between a film Leica and the Dlux. Any thoughts? Does anyone have any recommendations as which one I should get? So far I've heard alot of good reviews for the M6. Do you also know of any good reliable sites where I can purchase one from? I'd appreciate any suggestions as I have no idea where to start with this whole thing. Advertisement Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hi stickyfingers, Take a look here which to get?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
abrewer Posted February 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 20, 2007 I have no idea where to start with this whole thing. Neither do we with what you've said so far. Welcome to the Forum. Starting with a rangefinder, if one has no previous experience AT ALL with cameras is perfectly fine, as long as you realize you're talking over a thousand dollars for the body (before you even buy a lens) and a commitment to learn photography in a traditional sense of exposure, focus, etc. Have you checked the prices of the cameras you're looking at? I mean, the D-Lux is a nice little pocket point&shoot camera, but for the money it costs you can get one of the Panasonic variants for quite a bit less money and still have the Leica lens. And you also need a computer to download, and a printer, and working knowledge of a photo editing software (equally as hard to learn as exposure, focus, etc. above). So what exactly is appropriate for your friend? A fully manual M6 and a lens as above, or a little fully automated P&S? Frankly, if you just want to pop a surprise on him/her and let nature take its course, consider a little Leica CM: Leica CM film camera More info please!!! Thanks. stickyfingers Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 20, 2007 hi thanks for that message. yeah im soryr it was so vague. what are the highlights of the leica cm then? i see what you're saying about the digital but ive seen some photos and they look pretty awesome from that camera. my friend knows how to do all that fancy photography so it wouldnt be a problem. i realise the bodies are fairly hefty in price although i haven't really seen many cm's being advertised/sold? how much would they cost? thanks

Frankly, if your friend is good with Photoshop, he can take just about any camera's output and make it look good. I guess you might start by telling us what you want to spend.... One thousand, probably looking at the CM or the DLux3 Two thousand, maybe go after a Digilux3 (some of you digital guys help me out here!) Three thousand, now you're starting to talk "M" line (body and lens) Four thousand, look at going to a dealer and buying new or mint used "M" gear with return privileges and some trial runs with loaner gear Five thousand, look at this thread and dream: I Love my MP Thanks. stickyfingers Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 20, 2007 well i guess from that it looks like it'll be a cm or dlux. any suggestions with good sites selling them? would i be correct in saying there is no zoom on the cm? Half-Handed Posted February 20, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2007 Yes, the CM doesn't have a zoom but it is a cracking little camera - I feel like it has something extra which the digital models seem to lack. I suppose the entry level digital camera would be the C-Lux but I don't know whether it's well thought of. All the entry level digital Leicas seem to be rebadged Panasonics and it's a moot point whether they're any better. You could always buy your friend a second hand Digilux 2 if you can find one in good nick. In terms of buying CMs there was a thread on this recently, I think a few people were prepared to part with theirs. They have just been withdrawn by Leica (I think) so new ones are going to be harder to find but some dealers are still selling them.
stickyfingers Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted February 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) do you know how much the Cms were goign for?
Canfred Posted February 20, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 20, 2007 Hi Katerina , the CM is propably the best P&S ever made. We have one, the lens is a revelation in photography. Not just a P&S since all controls can be manipulated . Sadly its no longer in production but if you like have a look at B&H ( New York) there is still one on offer in red leather$1095. Used prices can be found on that auction site check completed sales. Manfred
topoxforddoc Posted February 20, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 20, 2007 Katerina, What sort of camera would you like to buy for your friend - semi point and shoot OR fully manual RF? It would help to know your budget too. The CM has been discontinued, although you may find a new old stock item. Second hand ones go for about GBP4-500. An M6 Classic (NOT TTL, although there's not too much price difference now) might be GBP 650 plus a lens 35 /2 Summicron (say GBP400 or so for 3rd/4th Gen). The M will be better in the long run, but the CM is great too. Best wishes, Charlie
