I just published my new book (on blurb, available in hard copy and e-book) of black and white photos from Palermo, Sicily. Taken during the Leica weekend this October.

If you have a moment please take a look, and maybe even buy one for someone for Xmas (or yourself) ;)

I would welcome any feedback.

Thanks

Nick

Guest Holy Moly

Hi Nick, that body of work is made in the tradition of a Leica M. Congratulation and Chapeau for your eye!

Having visited a friend near Cefalu I had no chance to visit this town last year. Normally I would be there by yesterday evening but an infect smashed me down.......:o

Anyway, spring next year I'll back and will visit Palermo with some rolls of Acros and others.

Here my contribution to the balcony-photography....;)

Thanks Nick. I really enjoyed looking through your book.

The X-Pan photographs are fantastic. I had forgotten what a wonderful camera it is.

I had the use of a friend's complete X-Pan system some years ago. I may borrow it from him again.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you for the interests and comments.

On titles, interesting comment. I personally, usually I think out of laziness or lack of ideas, prefer to have no or very few titles. Most feedback is always, why don't you write more or describe more what you are taking, and so in this book I tried to at the least give each photo a title and with one or to say a few more words. But I would be as happy with no titles myself.

On equipment and being discreet. First, I never carried all 3 cameras around together. I would either have my M9 with M7, or M9 with Hasselblad. One would usually be around my neck, the other in my shoulder bag or around my shoulder. And as they are all smallish rangefinder cameras that was not to much to carry nor as obviously obtrusive as some big slr with tele lense. Secondly, although I prefer to be a little discreet when shooting street, I don't usually like to be completely invisible because where you can have some eye contact or interraction with the subject it can bring it to life more. An exception to this is my photo of he boy on the front cover - although in that case he was fully aware of me shooting him but just carried on with his normal, thoughtful expression as if I wasn't there.

Thank you for the further comments

Jeff - in answer to your question, the photos are either shot on black and white film (Neopan 400 with the Leica M7 and Hasselblad XPan) or they are shot in Raw on the M9 and converted to black and white (rather than desaturated) in Photoshop with a slight layer using a film profile from Alien skin.

Richly detailed, nuanced, intriguing work.

I second the feedback on titles. I find a good compromise is to have a "no title" section of 8 photos. Give titles for the first four in a small block on the page before, and the titles for the last four in a small block after the last four. This allows me to really get into the photograpjer's vision, undisturbed. And your work deserves that sort of attention from your reader.

Thank you!

Wonderful work Nick.

I have a Blurb question.

Did you need to lighten the midtones or shadow tones? If so about how much? I have tried a BW experiment with Blurb and my images had a slight green cast. Do you think your Alien Skin layer defeated the cast? Did the layer have a slight selenium tone?

Many thanks...

Hi

In answer to the question over half of my black and white photos looked too dark, and had shadows with no detail, in my first draft of the book. This is consistent with my previous experience with blurb. I then lightened the shadows and/or midtones in all of the files (by a little more than I thought was acceptable) and put them back in the book. Just got the new book today and they are all as I wished.

Didin't have a problem with casts/tones - not one I could detect anyway.

Fantastic work, Nick. I bought the ebooks version and downloaded it to my iPad. Not quite as nice as having a printed book in front of me, but much easier to travel with across continents.

I will say that I'm very impressed with the quality of your photos in the ebooks version, and the convenience is fantastic. The book automatically downloads into the iBook application and appears on the virtual shelf. Your book is right next to "A Work In Progress", another outstanding volume by a fellow nameless member of this forum (Andy Barton). In both books the images have excellent detail and tonality on the iPad.

I hope that when the upcoming LUF Charity Book is published it is also available as an ebook.

Well done!!!

Stephen
