Has anybody in London/UK lost a Leica M9 with Summilux 35mm ASPH lens...?

Never implied the item was stolen,

just wanted to point it out on the forum to help anyone who may have lost the kit...

Anyway, the listing seems still active and legit...

Sorry - I thought the title of the thread implied that someone was selling stolen goods on eBay (shock horror...)

 

The seller appears to be some sort of Lost Property Department.

 

I wouldn't go anywhere near this.

The serial number on the lens is nearly legible.

 

Looks like 3976776 to me.

 

But my question is: if the real owner eventually turns up and claims the camera kit back during or after the auction is ended,

can he/she still get it back or not?

It may well in theory belong to the original owner's insurance company if they have paid out the claim if there was one.

There are a few suspicious things about this auction if you read the terms. I would stay clear.

Auction ended with 53 bids and final price of GB£5,800 (€6747.88).

 

I think that's crazy: poor description, poor (and just one!) picture of the item(s)

-and the 35mm Summilux seems to show lots of paint wear-

I mean it, how can you bid for that much with such little info/pictures and no warranty...???

I think one could buy a decent used M9 with 35 Summilux ASPH from a trustworthy US dealer for about the same price the winning bidder paid - and have no worries about a claim by a previous owner. What is it about the 'Bay that causes bidders to lose their wits?

I've no doubt that the deal is "legitimate" in the narrow sense that the seller has the goods and will send them to the buyer but, come on, "we will not issue invoices", "these are items that have not been claimed from our lost property department", "You as the buyer will hold the right of ownership". What sort of reputable outfit doesn't issue an invoice and would you take their word as gospel regarding title to the goods? £5800 for an M9 without charger and a user condition 35 Summilux (both of which may have been reported to Leica as stolen/lost property). I wouldn't have paid that much if it was for sale in the classifieds here from a trustworthy seller.

Well, you do get an invoice generated by ebay and a receipt from paypal (if you pay by that method). However I would insist on knowing the true identity of the seller before parting with my money - many withhold their details which is against ebay rules (you can request the info from ebay but it's only the info the seller has decided to share, which could be false).

 

Whatever, it's a silly price for a camera with no warranty, sold unseen, and previously lost or perhaps stolen! (who loses an M9 and doesn't bother to try to recover it?!).

 

If you look at the bidding history you will see the winner started bidding early on, and continued bidding and pushing the price up, a classic sign of a novice ebayer.

Certainly seems life theft to me... if that is 'lost property' then I imagine it should have been handed over to the POlice when it was unclaimed.... if it was unclaimed from the Police after a given period- In Australia at least- it would be handed back to the finder (finders keepers law).

 

And if the owner reported it as stolen- or possibly even lost- to Leica: then I imagine the new owner is going to have some serious headaches should they ever need a repair or service...

 

and the terms of the seller are franky ridiculous... though their feedback is Great! Good place to grabs a cheap ipod... think I would shop elsewhere for an M9...
