jaapv Posted February 19, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I tried to provoke the dreaded flare with an IR filter on my Elmar 2.8/50. See the result.... Â
davidmires Posted February 19, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Do you have an example of the same shot, taken without filter?
jaapv Posted February 19, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Err-no. Do I need it?
davidmires Posted February 19, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 19, 2007 I don't know what you would expect, flare-wise, when shooting into the sun. I was thinking that it wouldn't look any different without filter, that's all.
tashley Posted February 19, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Err-no. Do I need it? Â Yup, if you want your title line to be scientific rather than angry! Â :-( Â Tim
dhoelscher Posted February 19, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Cool picture! Â And, because your lens is greater in focal length than 35mm, no need to correct for cyan drift with the IR filter !!! Â DH
jaapv Posted February 19, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted February 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Exactly, and that is just my point. I put the sun at the edge, the worst position for flare, and it seems the filter makes not one whit of difference, despite dire predictions by prophets of doom. I'm very pleased at the result. jonoslack Posted February 19, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 19, 2007 That doesn't look like the Holland I know and love! Â surely you wouldn't expect flare with the sun in the picture. I hope the snow is good (we're off on the 6th March)
adan Posted February 19, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 19, 2007 (Ahem) Jaap V - where is the Netherlands are there mountains that size (or ANY size over 2 meters)? Â 8^) - looks like Colorado. Â I see SOME flare in the mountains below the sun, and a circle to the right of the sun - but really nothing I'd attribute to the IR filter or the sensor adding anything. About what I'd expect in any case.
waterlenz Posted February 19, 2007 Share #10  Posted February 19, 2007 No high light band either! Maybe the the light clouds over the sun helped. Attached shots done with no filter, 24/2.8. Oh, I see. I guess I didn't understand what you were getting at... Nice photo BTW, it shows the wide dynamic range of the M8. Where was it taken? Jamie Roberts Posted February 20, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Tom--that's a really odd artifact; almost like you were shooting through glass like a windshield or something. Â What ISO was that? I thought I'd seen *all* the M8 artifacts; I've never seen that one, even shooting right into the sun with the same lens! jaapv Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share #19 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Like this? Btw, photo's were taken in Italy, the Dolomites. Â Â

What ISO was that? I thought I'd seen *all* the M8 artifacts; I've never seen that one, even shooting right into the sun with the same lens!  ISO160, I was able to duplicate artifact by rotating the camera at that time (hence both V and H shots) but not since (~ 4000 pix). I previously posted a sun-at-edge streak (early Jan).
