Thomv Posted November 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sent my early M8 to Solms for a shutter and sapphire glass upgrade. It has a nice Cameraleather grey skin, which will be ripped off. Leica CS offered a 'free' replacement but when I selected another leather, they informed I had to pay for that. Also they did not confirm my request for a spare piece over covering for my original M8 grip. Do others have the same experience? Should I go for standard covering and replace it later myself with Cameraleather stuff? Or should I complain about this to CS?
Advertisement Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Hi Thomv, Take a look here M8 shutter upgrade, leather replacement. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
brill64 Posted November 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2011 ..complain away but you have zero cause to complain. they offered you the standard recovering for free because your leather has to be removed to open the camera right up. it may get damaged in the process but they are offering to replace the standard recovering for free. i'd take it. i guess you're after the grippy vulcanite, it's only standard on the m8.2. leica are sticklers for administration. same with the black dot. if you didn't keep the original grip covering, they are not obliged to re-supply it to you for free. you could ask them nicely but like anything else in this world, it has a price and you have to pay. recover the camera yourself later to get exactly what you want but order it now rather than think about it
jaapv Posted November 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted November 22, 2011 Just call your contact and ask. Basically you're entitled to the standard covering, but they have been known to offer leather for free or reduced price in a case like this.
Erik Gunst Lund Posted November 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2011 Last time my M8u went in for repair it had the Cameraleather copy 'Vulcanite' LPS offered to replace with Vulcanite free of charge
brill64 Posted November 23, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2011 last time i sent mine in for repair, it came back with exactly the same leather i had previously recovered it with myself. they had to fully open the camera to replace the monitor so i guess it depends on who does the job, how strong is the covering and whether they think it can be saved or not. NikonJeff Posted November 23, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 23, 2011 I sent my early M8 to Solms for a shutter and sapphire glass upgrade. Should I go for standard covering and replace it later myself with Cameraleather stuff? Or should I complain about this to CS? Out of curiosity what did they quote you for upgrades? I was contemplating the whole M8 upgrades but at $2k it's a bit much to swallow. I just saw an M8.2 with a 1 year Leica warranty for $3500 and that makes more sense to me. Sell my M8 and grab that one.
Thomv Posted November 23, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted November 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) CS offered replacement at some cost, not very much though. Unfortunately the wrong colour and no mentioning of replacement leather for the M8 grip. I decided to go for the standard vulcanite and to rip it off as soon as my beloved M8 arrives back home. I ordered a cameraleather grey goatskin set in anticipation some time ago. It's already waiting to be mounted :-)
Shade Posted November 24, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 24, 2011 Try to haggle and persuade, they are usually nice people. But if you're planning to rip it off anyway, ask them if you can have the leather unattached. So you can have a spare later on instead. Just a thought. jaapv Posted November 24, 2011 Share #9 Posted November 24, 2011 I can tell you now - they won't send out a camera without the leather attached.
Thomv Posted November 24, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted November 24, 2011 I can tell you now - they won't send out a camera without the leather attached. I wouldn't even want them to do so, I spent €€€€ and at least want to see a proper camera when I open the box..... Hopefully it will arrive soon. jaapv Posted November 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted November 24, 2011 I'll ask my M9 - they are probably side by side on the workbench
