Ouch.. Anyway, a bit of cold comfort, but you will get a year's guaranty on the whole camera with this, whatever you choose (although I saw a few posts that Leica USA did not do this:confused:)

Thanks jappv and everyone, and Magnet... I got the quoting from the Solms yesterday, dealer's negotiation seems to have failed. It is about £800 for repair or £1000 for upgrading M8.2 new shutter. But I still wonder is it still worth cuntinuing to keep the Leica or dump it. I know according to the Leica's philosophy I can't go on and keep a preowned M digital as it it going to be an expensive deal for the long run.what is next and where am I going to stand next. I must have more savings reserved for the sensor or some other issues that shows up soon next.

So according to my experience, the survival going for a refurbish or preowned Leica M8 is 2 or 3 for out of ten and in between there can be very rare cases of without any incidents and with more LUCKS AS YOU SAY.

So for once I have taken out my M6 After one year and I have loaded my Hasselblad with a film which actually had been expired in the fridge. I think this is some thing happened to bring me down to earth in one way to break my block or some kind. But frankly I missed my M8 and I think I feel naked without it.

Thanks everyone for the concerns

Regards and with lot of hopes!!!:D:D:D

Shade : your prediction was pin point and what I got from them was exactly the same what you said. Did you have any experience like this one yourself?

regards

Cyril

Fortunately not. At times I have some paranormal link to Leica's pricing department I think. I pinpointed the price of both M8 and M9...:) Unhappily it is not reliable:o

Thanks Holy Moly.

Jappv, thanks again. I had a little reason and rights to get a bit cold and angry about the attitudes of Leica. apart from that my camera when I bought, next day I had to return back to < Richard Caplan> for repair the shutter. So again the shutter broke within one year.

I did not count how many count of actuations done so far. Even the camera get a new shutter within another two years I have to get ready for another shutter replacement or a major repair. I think the concept of the whole M-digital is based on a way we are tricked get of a first M-digital disposable.

Shame on you Leica. all I can say too...

If it was on a tripod with a longish thread, and the M8's manual shows that the tripod socket conforms to some cryptic standard (which my poor eyesight cannot decipher - perhaps 4503?), I woulld be rather bitter about Solms not simply writing the maximum thread length safe to use on Leicas.

I entered that standard reference into google (before wrecking my R8's shutter), to see what it meant. I would have had to pay to receive that whole standartd, as if I were a manufacturer. Solms quote nearly $2,000 Aust for repairs. I refused, had the camera returned to me, sold it for $125 for parts, and bought a new chrome R8; and subsequently being very careful to always use the winder, and screw plates into that which has heaps of room for any tripod/head.

I do not know if the tripod thread is part of the M*'s base plate, or carries through into the body. Either way I would now be inclined to scream at Solms for poor design, or lack of clarity in the manual.

It may well not be a tripod-induced problem. or you may have never bothered to read the manual.

From Solms hope for the best, but expect the worst.

Cynical, a bit bitter and twisted, John,

All it takes is one grain of sand..

All it takes is one grain of sand..

Here, Here, my Good Man!

Put a grain of sand in the right place and you can bring down an AirBus, a Boeing, even a lowly Piper Cub.

A Grain in the right place can stop a Giant Lorry in it's tracks, put a Catepillar BullDozer out of commission, or stop a 'Deere in it's tracks.

The Convenient Interchangeable Lens Feature just makes it so much more convenient to encounter such issues accidentally.

I do wonder though if the 'mystique' of the older film M's and their 'long' lived shutters fails to extend to the modern film M's? My fuzzy recollection is that those of the late model Film M's which are sporting electronic's, batteries, and multibladed metal shutters, are just as vulnerable to grains of sand as -say- an M8 or an M9 would be. Please correct or advise if I am mistaken.

Sincerely,

Richard in Michigan

Guest Holy Moly
except for the M7....

The M7 has an electronical controlled cloth shutter as all analogue Ms have, except for the battery driven times......

The white dot on the first cloth is the metering spot as for the M6 + MP.

No blades, no stress......

I have decided to give my M8 a second life and a chance. whatever happens next and I have few reasons to continue with M. That is mainly due to what I had learned through M6 and it's ability which is still preserved and based on M for M8.

So I have gone through the prices of updating to M8.2 shutter is € 800 . in Leica techinical and repair page. dose any one knows these prises changed for some reason and if that is so ,how much is the current charges ? .

Cyril, the prices haven't changed. I just got my M8 back after a long wait of mrte than a month. The upgrade worth the money and the wait.

That is a long wait , Thom. I've long since given up comprehending the different workflows at Solms. My upgraded M9 has been back long since even if you and I sent our cameras in at the same time- and I had to wait for a slot in the production line for engraving too.

Yes, it was a long wait. I found it funny to receive all the old parts back as well, now I also have a used but perfectly working standard shutter.

Can anyone properly mount this shutter in Cyril's damaged camera? I'll be happy to donate it.

Thomv-

Thank you very much for your kind and generous offer! I have already commissioned For the upgrade through my Leica retailer RICHARD CAPLAN who has taken care of the matter for reasonable price. So I am happy and will be in peace of mind with this more reliable shutter for the M8. than the faster one. I know It is a long wait and due to this end of the year periods as well. So it is no point of complaining.but to cross two fingers and Ask for Santa to sped up the process and make a quick delivery...:D:D

Thomv just one mere question????? now your camera have a brand New Shutter and the actuation level is on Zero ( except for the Lab pre-testing clickings?) Isn't it?

Thanks guys!!!
