Advertisement Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Hi kengrooms, Take a look here What's the best 50mm Summicron R?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted November 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2011 First version (6 elements, 5 groups, 1964-1976) has been replaced by a 2nd and last one in 1976 (6 elements, 4 groups, # 11216, 1976-2009). The latter has a built-in hood and works great on my 5D. I have no experience with the 1rst version sorry. ho_co Posted November 12, 2011 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2011 Welcome to the forum, Ken. The later version is an improvement over the earlier one optically. It set the world of camera optics on its ear when it came out, having five plane surfaces. It also has the advantage of taking "normal" filters (E55 instead of Series VI) and having a built-in hood, as lct mentioned.
kengrooms Posted November 13, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted November 13, 2011 Thank you both for the warm welcome and the insight. I knew you Leica forum guys would know! And the lens review was exactly what I was looking for. Can I ask a follow-up question? Could you recommend a Leitax man to change the bayonet on the lens? Or can any camera repairman do it? ns_ng Posted November 13, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2011 Thank you both for the warm welcome and the insight. I knew you Leica forum guys would know! And the lens review was exactly what I was looking for. Can I ask a follow-up question? Could you recommend a Leitax man to change the bayonet on the lens? Or can any camera repairman do it? I have replaced 4 of my R lenses with Leitax mounts. The 50'Cron is an easy DIY job. Remove the 6 screws and shroud. Replace with Leitax mount, making certain the small ball is in place. Refer to the Leitax website for instructions. N.S. ng
andybarton Posted November 13, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2011 Agreed. Leitaxing a lens takes about 5 minutes.
