spylaw4 Posted November 8, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted November 8, 2011 When is this puppy gonna be available? Â Or better still: Â "Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war, That this foul deed shall smell above the earth" Â Well perhaps not the last line! Â Â And yes, I did have to go and look up the full quotation!
RobertJRB Posted November 8, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted November 8, 2011 Isn't the lens already available? I was in the new leica store in Holland (Foto Henny Hoogeveen) and they had one on display. I remember because I was surprised how much smaller it is than the 18mm super elmar.
kemal_mumcu Posted November 8, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted November 8, 2011 Some people seem to have one in their possesion. Tom A. has had his for a while. Â Flickr: T&T and Mr B's stuff tagged with leicasuperelmar21mmf34asph
spylaw4 Posted November 8, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted November 8, 2011 I think that not everyone returned theirs after the initial problems.

bybrett Posted November 8, 2011 Share #8  Posted November 8, 2011 The lens is back on the market! spylaw4 Posted November 8, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted November 8, 2011 We did get some in today - all pre-ordered. Â Brett is right, there are slight barrel differences to the original shipped version. The ring with the depth of field scale is different. Â Will those who kept hold of one from the first batch have something collectable?
StephenPatterson Posted November 8, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted November 8, 2011 Â Will those who kept hold of one from the first batch have something collectable? Â Or have a lens that's going to bind up and cause problems over time? Obviously this recall was not some "minor" adjustment. The Leica rep I spoke with said the entire housing was new, and only the lens elements were being salvaged from the original lenses. kemal_mumcu Posted November 8, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted November 8, 2011 Correct, some in London today too. Slightly different lens barrel to the "prototype". farnz Posted November 8, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted November 8, 2011 ... The Leica rep I spoke with said the entire housing was new, and only the lens elements were being salvaged from the original lenses. Ouch! Â Pete.
250swb Posted November 8, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted November 8, 2011 Â Will those who kept hold of one from the first batch have something collectable? Â A paperweight collector may be interested. But some claim to have one, which means the dealer has cut and run because they should have been returned and the customer warned. Â Steve
algrove Posted November 9, 2011 Share #14 Â Posted November 9, 2011 So if the lens barrel has been changed does that change how the lens renders images? Are the expert reviews still valid?
StephenPatterson Posted November 9, 2011 Share #15 Â Posted November 9, 2011 So if the lens barrel has been changed does that change how the lens renders images? Are the expert reviews still valid? Â I would be surprised if the previously published reviews didn't at least receive an "update". At the very least Leica should publish new specs and MTF charts. Â I am also disappointed that Leica did not communicate with customers about the extent of this recall (not just a simple factory adjustment), give any updates during the redesign, or offer any timeline for delivery. This was not some new lens that had yet to be released by the Leica skunkworks, this was a product that had already been launched, with product in dealer's and some customer's hands. Keeping customers in the dark for 6 months is not the best way to build brand loyalty. Â Can you imagine if Apple launched a new Macbook only to recall them all within a few days and make customers wait six months to receive replacements? spylaw4 Posted November 9, 2011 Share #16 Â Posted November 9, 2011 So if the lens barrel has been changed does that change how the lens renders images? Are the expert reviews still valid? Â Simply put, no and yes.

brill64 Posted November 9, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted November 9, 2011 i still have the original, 'defective' version. it's a little tight on my m9 but sharp as a razor. i've been told that i should send it back to solms but to who or how, i've no idea.. Â plus it's such a great little lens, i can't bear not to have it in my bag. guess i should bite the bullet sooner rather than later. does anyone have any info or can offer any advice? If so and you have not been contacted by Leica I'm shocked and surprised.  My course of action would be to contact Leica customer service in your country and request an exchange for the new version, noting that you had not received a recall notice (if accurate). Now that new inventory is flowing they should be able to accommodate you.  If you do keep this lens, and a problem later develops (for instance, after the warranty has expired) you might find that repair is not an option.  Stephen
brill64 Posted November 10, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted November 10, 2011 thank you, stephen. i've not actually registered my copy so that will be why i'm hearing about the recall from the forum.
