Kentmere films,experiences anyone?

When I started to use film again earlier this year (and about twenty years after last developing a film), Kentmere 100 and Ilford HP5 were the first that I bought. Since then I have used eight rolls of the Kentmere, most of which I developed in Ilfosol 3. The results seem fine to me and scan well. An example on my Flickr page, quite a few others in that set are also on Kentmere (check the tags). So personally I have had no problems with it and have been pleased with the negatives. Having written that, the rolls currently in my M7 and M4 are the last of the batch and a batch of Fuji Acros 100 is waiting in the fridge...

I used Kentmere 400 but the film failed to excite me.

I mean, it seemed to be cheap but, looking carefully, not much cheaper than TRI-X. The emulsion layer is thinner, therefore it requires longer developing times and it is barely possible, if at all, to obtain 24 frames out of each roll: Usually you can't fully advance past 23...

There is not much literature about it on the web, so I had to experience myself... I found out that it works fairly well in Rodinal 1+25 for 9 minutes at 20 degrees Celsius and that it is better to stop in water, without using any stop bath, to somehow tame the harsh contrast that it would otherwise yeld. Fixing was OK for 3 minutes in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4.

Hope this helps.

Since Ilford bought and control Kentmere, I assumed they were reliable and bought 200ft of the ISO 100 and the same of the ISO 400 in bulk rolls from Freestyle. I only have three bulk loaders and when one of them is free I will start on one of these films. I probably should buy more bulk loaders!

Goodness knows where the film comes from, the old Kentmere company never made film, only paper.

It's cheaper Ilford/Harman emulsion. In fact meant for export. You can also buy the same in 35mm and 120 roll film under Rollei RPX 100/400.

If you want to push the film: SPUR made for Rollei the RPX-D developer for it. It works very well.
