jlancasterd Posted July 16, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) As was bound to happen once I started changing lenses 'in the field', the dreaded dust bunnies have started to invade my DMR. I've tried blowing them off with compressed air (using one of the Hama hand pumps so that no petrochemicals are involved) but this has not been effective and the tell-tale blobs remain. What do other people do? I'm very loath to use any form of cleaning liquid. Is it permissible to use a clean microfibre cloth? The handbook is remarkably unhelpful about what one can or cannot do and there is no sign tha Leica are going to offer any kind of officially santioned cleaning kit. mgcd Posted July 17, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 17, 2006 John - This is detailed in the DMR instructions booklet: page 76 & 77. Leica makes clear recommendations: Sensor Swab (Type 3, 24mm) http://www.photosol.com

jlancasterd Posted July 17, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted July 17, 2006 John - This is detailed in the DMR instructions booklet: page 76 & 77. Leica makes clear recommendations: Sensor Swab (Type 3, 24mm) http://www.photosol.com Thanks Conrad I'd made the mistake of relying on the 'Care Instructions' entry in the index, which refers you to page 108 and doesn't mention care of the sensor at all... I'll contact the UK agents for the swabs and Eclipse liquid.
jlancasterd Posted July 17, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted July 17, 2006 I use Eclipse fliud and senor swaps. Great having the sensor right there to clean Thanks Guy - see my reply to Conrad, above. I agree that it is great to be able to get at the sensor so easily - I never did manage to completely get rid of the dust on the sensor of my Fuji S1 because of the difficulty of access - I hope Leica don't make it difficult to get at the sensor on the M8... Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 17, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 17, 2006 I am hoping that if they do come out with a DMR II version that has the intergrated body we have talked about make the LCD a door that swings open and the sensor is on the inside so you can just open and clean than close the door . Of course you can tell i am not a engineer because easier said than done I am sure.
cornbarn Posted July 18, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just bought some of the recommended swabs and Eclipse fluid for the DMR. Before I use these for the first time does anyone have any particular "dos or don'ts" which might help? Many thanks.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 18, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 18, 2006 Tony pretty simple . Slightly wet the swab and go one or two stokes in the same direction and that is it. close back and test for dust bunnies. I just did mine yesterday an d good to go. BTW i have only had to do this 3 times in a year, canons in a year maybe 10 or more. The DMR just does not get much dust there

jbstitt Posted July 18, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 18, 2006 I had some very persistent spots on my DMR for quite awhile. Tried the swabs and fluid very gently and one pass with the swab and they did not go away. I finally really soaked a swab (not dripping) used it twice, once each side, and let it set a minute or so. My thought was that it was not just dust but a product of condensation that had dried on the surface and needed to be rewet to be removed. After a short time I used a new swab and fluid and wiped twice, once each side of the swab. WALLA, the spots went away. Just thought this experience might be helpful to someone who has a very presistent spot. John Stitt
mitchell Posted July 18, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 18, 2006 Has anyone used Artic Butterfly or other dry brushes by the company Visable Dust? Artic Butterfly is a little synthetic brush that is spun by a little battery electric motor to give it a charge of static electricity. After turning off the motor, that is with the brush no longer spinning, dust is attracted to the electrical charge, and swept off the sensor in one or two strokes. No liquid is involved. Smaller than an electric toothbrush, and convenient. I have one but haven't used it yet. Best, Mitchell
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 18, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 18, 2006 that may be good for dust but if you get a spot which i have it won't work. Sometimes this maybe grease or some other gunk and a brush really won't take care of that but the sensor swaps will with eclipse and if so you may have to do it twice but like it was mentioned use 2 different swaps otherwise you maybe putting it back on
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 18, 2006 Share #14 Posted July 18, 2006 The beauty of the DMR is you can clean the whole sensor and not have this stuff stuck in the corners like others , one reason i mentioned on the future models some kind of LCD door to open clean sensor than close but this maybe a real stretch to try and do correctly
