zenonzinonos Posted October 18, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The meter on my CL recently started playing up and I'm not sure whether it's a mechanical problem or the sensor. Needless to say the readings are all over the place, even though I've checked the battery (the old 1.35 version). Here's what happens when I try to take a reading: Needle shows underexposure even when using 'sunny 16' as a guide, so I open the lens to 2.0 and rotate the shutter speed dial - I detect movement in the needle, but when the shutter speed gets to 2 (ie half a second) a red half-moon object pops out behind the needle! Any suggestions would be welcome...

TomB_tx Posted October 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 18, 2011 ... but when the shutter speed gets to 2 (ie half a second) a red half-moon object pops out behind the needle! You must be using 400 ASA film! The red warning will pop out at different speeds depending on the film speed that is set. It means you have gone below the effective range of the meter. The CDS meter cell of the CL-era cameras tends to go non-linear as it ages, so that it may be accurate at some light levels, but not others. Mine had this problem, as well as a "sticky" needle that didn't want to move until it saw very bright light. I had a full service done by Gus Lazzari (Home), and it cured all problems.
