Macr-Elmar M 90 f4 with M9/M8

I bought yesterday a Macro-Elmar 90 f4.

That's really a very nice and light lens, perfect for traveling!

I have also the APO-SUMMICRON 90 which has a bigger max aperture, but weights also much more.

I tried the lens on both my M9 and M8 and would say it's a perfect "portrait" camera with very nice bokeh.

I'm considering to buy the "macro adapter" as well as the "angle viewfinder" that came with original kit.

Does anyone have suggestions/tips on it?

Also, leica-camera.com suggests to use this lens "coupled" with a Tri-Elmar 16/18/21 (a lens that I definitely would like to buy!!!), also any tip on this pair?

The only thing I regret is the maximum aperture of f4......but the lens is doing extremely fine!

Yes great lens indeed. It is my favorite 'slow' 90 ever. It is so small that i bring it always in my bag. The metal hood has not changed since the sixtees at least. It is quite efficient per se but i prefer the rubber hoods for 'thin' Tele-Elmarit 90/2.8 (# 11250 + hood ring # 11251 & hood cap # 11252) or Elmar-C 90/4 (# 12517 + hood cap # 14191) which both take very little room on the collapsed lens. Especially the Elmar's that i just screw onto the IR-cut filter. The latter is mandatory for the M8. No experience with the M9 sorry.

I bought the Macro Elmar Set few weeks ago. I absolutely love the lens. However, I do not use much the adaptor and the angle viewfinder. The only time I used them is to test the lens.

I would strongly NOT recommend the adaptor and the angle view finder unless you really need to shoot in macro condition. Its a pain in tha back when you need to carry extra gear with you out in the field shooting.

Agree it is a great little lens. I carry the entire set since I love the VF and now I do not miss any macro shots that I see.

The hood even fits my little 2.8 Tele-Elmar 90 that I sometimes use when wanting to travel VERY light since it weighs in at 226g although this macro f4 is a gem.

NIce to see another convert......

My 90/2 is redundant and about to be sold.....

The macro adapter is very useful and I use it a lot .... the case however is miles too big and I found a nice leather mobile phone case that fits it perfectly..... it weighs almost nothing and takes up no room at all. The reversible metal hood is a menace (scratches everything and is a pain to use and store) so I too have swapped it out for a collapsible rubber hood which is on permanently.

Never used the right angle viewfinder and apart from taking pics virtually at ground level I can't say I ever will....

I really can't praise this little lens enough ...... I take it everywhere and like the other poster I now have the ultimate 3 lens travelling set up .... WATE, MATE, 90/4, ....... +/- Noctilux 50/0.95 if I'm feeling strong and 'artistic'.

I am certain that more great photos are lost by not having the right gear with you because of weight/bulk and convenience issues than by not having a 1.4 aperture lens......;)

You also don't have the focussing issues of the 90/2 (and others) with f4 and everything is spot on...... even if your M8/9 viewfinder calibration is slightly off. This was one issue that really put me off the 90/2 as my hit rate, particularly with portraits with the subject not 100% static was poor .... no point having a great lens if you cant use <2.8 because half the pics are out of focus ......

All well said. And here I thought I was the only one who thought the leather case for macro adapter was way too large.

Must say I regularly use the right angle finder, even with a 1.4 viewfinder magifier especially when down at ground level trying a macro shot. The lens distance scale in macro mode sure saves me time when first setting up a shot.

Just now starting to review my summer shots (around 10 to 12k's worth) and I am surprised how many hits I got with my 90/2. Must admit those hits were landscape or architecture shots at f8 or so. But then again I am surprised how many non-hits I got with my 135/3.4! Or then again maybe I should not be surprised.

Do most of you look at in focus shots on a 1:1 level on say LR3?

Just thought of a last question regarding those of you with a MATE. How do find its' images say versus a fixed focal length lens in the 28 to 50 range?

So are you going to get the macro adapter and/or right angle viewfinder?

YES I DID! Quite curious about that "set"......I found it at a reasonable price at Ffordes in UK. Now it's time to start and use it.

By the way I'm also curious about the Visoflex III. So many users say it's extremely good for macro........

Stop the 90 down only for debth of focus. It does not get sharper stopping down

I found this to be true as well. I was stopping down but now I just leave it at f4 all the time. You don't gain much sharpness stopping down but you do gain in shutter speed.

Well it is interesting you mention this. I am new to Leica and after reading and seeing Visoflex setup photos and the images these setups produce, I bought one, a Viso III.

I also got the Telyt 280 f4.8 #11914 for use with it. I guess the 200, 400 and 580 are also lenses to consider.

I have not yet used it, but after an upcoming extended trip I plan to get started with it around the new year. I have read Viso shims can be an issue with focus and have not yet found a set to have when I do start tinkering with it from a focus stand point.
