Well, I just took delivery of my immaculate (except from trivial marking where the hood locks in) E49 MATE sn3948xxx (?≥2002). Bought for the cost of most of the E55s currently on line for sale. On testing this afternoon everything seems fine. I'll need to 6-bit code the lens at some time. :)

Mark, welcome to this post you now have one of the rarest Leica lens. Yes you should get it coded, although I took a cruise around the Orient plus we visited your county a great place with great people enjoy your lens. :)

Thanks Stan.

I'd been thinking about this for some time and had already decided that if I was to get a MATE that it would be the E49. I was incredibly lucky to get one in such condition at a reasonable price. In fact, considering how few come up for sale I was lucky to get one at all.

Now to go out and use it :).

MarkP, well its a few days since your last post on this topic, so have you used the mate if so please send some of your images. I know all that follow this thread would be interested in seeing them, I'm no expert and few that post here are also. :)

Mark-

You and I own the same series MATE. Mine is also 3948xxx, #11625, E49, hood #12450 and finger tab. Bought it from Dale Labs in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It had been 6 bit coded in Solms. I called Leica NJ to confirm that and Sarah gave me verbal confirmation to the affirmative.

I have not used it to date, but due to Stan's insistence guess I had better use it! This poor lens has hardly ever been used I guess now that I have pulled it out inspect its beauty. The only thing I dislike is the front plastic cap #14002.

Hi Stan,

yes, what a wonderful and versatile lens, especially as the weather was terrible so it was fantastic not having to change lenses in the wind and rain. I'll post photos ASAP but work has been really busy - lots of people are very inconveniently getting sick ;)

Algrove,

what a coincidence (not that many E49 MATEs were made).

Get out an use it!

Mark

Mark, you mention bad weather. Do not be deterred from using the MATE is lowish natural light. It performs brilliantly at full aperture, specially at 35 and 50mm settings. You can always increase the ISO or use Auto ISO to guard against camera shake. You do not have to stop down to improve performance!

I used it on the Monochrom at ISO 320 at all f-stops, but I'm more than happy to shoot wide open, it is a Leica after all :). I mainly shoot 50 & 28mm so having the 3 focal lengths in that range without having to change lenses in wet windy weather was very easy. Weather may have been bad but overall plenty of light in South-Eastern Queensland in Summer even if very overcast.

Thighslapper, my E49 begins 3892 I believe so that means it was made close to yours and certainly before 39x as you say Erwin says

Stan, sent mine to Leica for 6 bit coding and 50mm flare fixing. Sent pics to demonstrate. They said they added black paint inside to reduce the flare and indeed it was almost two years later last month that I got some in Solvang, California. So if mine was not Ver3 before assume it is now:D

.

efreed2754:

My copy S/N is 3896603 and flared badly @ 50mm. Did you send yours to Leica NJ to fix the problem?

Thanks.

Guys, no one is posting new images with their so called E49 Mates but, all have reasons (true or BS) for not posting images with their so called E49 Mates. I am almost 81 years old and can hardly leave my home without assistance so whats your excuse for BLABBING, and BLABBING, my lens is being this and that and one could, would, start to believe they may be BSing about owing a Mate. Or perhaps when they talk about owning a Mate they mean their SPOUSE. These excuses are starting to sound like ABBOT and COSTELLO, for our younger posters they were top comedians in my day 40's, 50's, and even the 60's. Whose on first, etc, etc. One of the most famous sayings in my day was "MONEY TALKS AND B--lS--T WALKS". So lets see your money (E49 images) or continue walking (BS). ;):)

Keep hanging on in there old 'un..... there will be something....

Two quick shots with the Tri-Elmar-M 28-35-50 mm 1:4 Asph (E49). Both have received some mild capture sharpening in Camera Raw and no further sharpening beyond that. Downscaling was done in Photoshop using the Bicubic resampling method, not Bicubic Sharper.

The first is at 28 mm and full aperture.

Leica M9; Tri-Elmar-M 28 mm Asph; ISO 320/26°, f/4, 1/250 s

The second is just a test shot right into the low winter sun, to see how the lens would flare at 50 mm which allegedly is the most flare-prone setting. As you can see, there are two local reflexes which I feel are very reasonable, given the bright sun is right within the frame. Contrast is somewhat reduced but in a smooth and benign way, evenly across the frame, without any wide-area magenta colour casts or local contrast anomalies. Overall, I like the performance in harsh back-lighting conditions very much—definitely better than with many Summicron lenses.

I have a selection of pics somewhere ..... but as Aperture doesn't identify the lens I can't identify them.... may import all the old stuff into LR and see if I can locate them.... but it's far simpler just to use it for a week and see what I come up with... it needs an outing anyway.. .:)
