My M8 went to Solms twice after I decided it was an untrustworthy device and promised myself that I would sell it when it would come back. After being in Solms for 6 months (spare parts scarcity because of the tsunami) I finally got it back. At that time I wanted to test my new 50,1.4 E43, so I inboxes my M8.

I totally fell in love with it again! The raw files that came out of this camera are amazing! And the convenience of digital is a plus too.

The problem is that I am out of warranty and I need to trust this camera. I spent allot of money on leica gear and I am not a wealthy man. So if it breaks down I don't know if I can pay for it's expensive repairs...

Can you buy extra warranty? And is this wise? And how many of you guys have had no problems with an M8. Am I extremely unlucky or does this camera break down allot and is it more safe to stick to my M6?

Thanks

Eelco, I've been using my M8 for the last 4 years and more without a fault or the need to send it to Solms (except for the beginning since when I bought it it had a vertical misaligned rangefinder that was fixed in a couple weeks by the Leica CA).

Since then it has always worked flawlessy. I think that as any other electronic device you must be lucky not to get the problematic or faulty one (I had to sell a Sony Cd player after sending it four times to the assistance in less than six months).

My M8 is a tractor and since back from Solms three years and a half ago it was perfect.

Well its hard to say. All mechanical items break down at a certain point of time, and none of us can guarantee that for you. Now what I can tell you is that since you had it serviced recently and got it all done, nothing should be wrong in the near future. However, depending on how you abuse and use your camera, that is entirely unpredictable. I had a friend who had his m8 fell down and still shoots just fine. My m9 came brand new and 2 weeks later had the motherboard or sensorboard busted.

well, nobody can answer that.

I bought a M8 the day it was launched ( back in September 2006 ) , in Singapore - they had one in stock and I got it a terrific price.

Used it and abuse it for 3 years in a row - there wasnt a shot that I wasnt to take because it was supposedly a fragile camera. Result : even a bit of rust it had ( when I sold it ) due to the fact that once I thought it was a good idea to run after kids that were playing near the sea in Brazil.

Never needed repairs, worked like a charm ( apart from the obvious and talk to death problems with IR and such ) and I replaced with a M9, which continues to solder on.

As far as I know, my M8 ( which is now on Norway ) continues to takes pictures and never missed a beat.

My M9 - she already has a cracked LCD display , which clearly shows that I dont exactly baby my equipment. But they baby me back by getting me wonderfull pictures.

Oh and the shot on the beach in Brazil ? Here it is :
