algrove Posted October 8, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted October 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking at 24mm and 21mm lenses, but since I am fairly new to the world of Leica it would be interesting to know why certain users pick the Elmarit over the Elmar or visa versa. Â I know there have been threads on this, but I got totally confused when Digillyod said the 24 Elmar was in his opinion better than the Elmarit. Yes speed does matter to me so 2.8 appeals a lot. . Seems as though the Elmarits are no longer produced in 24 or 21 mm, just the 28 mm. True?
Advertisement Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Hi algrove, Take a look here Elamrit or Elmar-which is best in same focal length?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted October 8, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted October 8, 2011 Elmarit lenses are faster at f/2.8. If you need the extra speed, that is the better choice. Elmar lenses are generally smaller and lighter. Take your pick.
algrove Posted October 8, 2011 Author Share #3  Posted October 8, 2011 Thanks David. I really was trying to find out about overall sharpness from people who might own both or have used both. Some say corner sharpness is better in one or the way it draws an image is better than the other  Maybe someone has experience with both lenses and could offer some first hand experience.  2.8 is preferred, but in daylight or open shade either could work for me with landscapes.  Does anyone know if they still make either the 21 or 24 Elamrit? Ellie Posted October 8, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted October 8, 2011 There's a comparison between the Elmar/Elmarit 24 here: 24mm comparison part 2 Â
lct Posted October 8, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted October 8, 2011 The Elmarits 21 and 24 are discontinued and the Super-Elmar 21 is not still available so your Leica choice so far is reduced to Summilux 21, Summilux 24, Elmar 24 or second hand lenses i'm afraid. Edit: Some shops might still have new Elmarits in their stock though.
algrove Posted October 9, 2011 Author Share #6 Â Posted October 9, 2011 After looking at the site Ellie suggested, it sure looks like Puts likes the Elmars over the Elmarits. He even mentions the price is relatively better for the Elmar 24. Â I guess the Elmar designs are newer and as such Puts seems to like these new wide angle lens designs. Ellie Posted October 9, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted October 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking at Leica data sheets the Elmar 24 seems to be the best lens ever to reproduce fine details all the way to the edge without falloff. I'm thinking of this lens for myself in the future, because it's small, lightweight, has lower price and I usually only use f4-f8 for the outdoor shots I have in mind. algrove Posted October 10, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted October 10, 2011 I bought the Elmar 24. Won't be able to give it a try for another week, but ask me later. I do LOTS of landscape and hope it will augment my work there. Also just got the 18 SEM even though I have a Zeiss 18/4. Actually I also have a Zeiss 25, but love Leica drawn images with my other Leica lenses so figured could not go very wrong adding these new lenses to my inventory.
