mholtsberg Posted October 4, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just purchased on a whim an Elmar f=5cm 2.8. It seems to be in decent shape and glass looks VERY clean. I cannot find a definite answer as to if the lens is ok to collapse into my M8. I have not tried yet. I have shot a few test images and it seems quite sharp. Any input would be appreciated.

lct Posted October 5, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2011 Depends on the red values below when the lens is focused at infinity. This copy from 1962 is OK but beware that all Elmars 50 are not equal. See: Is it safe to collapse a 50mm Elmar? - Leica User Forum.
Shade Posted October 6, 2011 Share #3 Posted October 6, 2011 I think it's not safe to collapse the Elmar on the digital. But I can be wrong, you should carefully measure it.
mholtsberg Posted October 6, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted October 6, 2011 Thanks to all who responded. After long deliberation, I am returning the lens and purchasing a 50 f2 summicron.
