When that filter was made nobody in Wetzlar had even considered the possibility of putting an IR cut filter on a lens ;)

14169 is just a filter adapter ring to mount series filters on an 58 mm filter thread btw. The glass that is in it is the exchangeable filter.

Jaap-

So I gather this must just a piece of clear glass which I must now assume the previous owner used for front element protection only. Sound right?

Yes. Series filters are still available, you can use the ring to lock them down.

Maybe in Europe Leica Series VIII are available for the M9, but in the US I can only find Leica series VIII filters as UVa/IR-for M8. I have not tried to see if other filter manufacturers still offer series VIII UVa filters. I really only want a filter for protection.

Henning-

Got my first Visoflex III this week. Am just looking at it for the moment. Also got a Telyt 280 4.8 that looks like it has an adapter fitted, but still fits in the original 280 box-Part # 11914. Now I see on the box that the elliptical adapter came with it having a tripod mount at the bottom.

Trust this lens is pretty good. It also came with a 14169 filter with only VIII markings on it. Hope it is a UVa not a UVa/IR.

Any thoughts?

Correct... 11914 is the last version of 280, and differently from the previous 2 versions (11902 and 11912) doesn't need OUBIO - fits directly on Viso II/III. A fine lens.

Luigi- Thanks. Do you know of any Series VIII UVa filter that would fit under that retainer ring I have? We are hoping to get to Italy this next Spring/early Summer after shooting Lavande fields in Provence. What are the most picturesque Tuscan villages you might know of?

B+W (Schneider) has several series VIII filter on its list, UV included: they fit your adapter.

Tuscany... is a very large region full of typical ancient villages,,, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Volterra are in the same area and all worth a visit... more to south, Pitigliano, Magliano,Sorano is another fine trio... keep part of your budget for some good bottles of wine... :) In late spring / start of Summer Isola D'Elba, not yet full of tourists, is a very pleasant place to go for a pair of days: from Piombino is a quick boat+car trip.

Both B&W and Heliopan provide series VIII filters. Those brands are widely available in the USA afaik. Series 5.5 seems to be discontinued btw.

There is no objection to use an UV/IR filter as a protective filter on longer lenses. On the contrary, it can only help in many cases. Like shooting Lavender under the Mediterrenean sun. That is a near-impossible color to catch and you want to remove all residual IR contamination from your image, even with an M9.

I found the best way to find Series filters in the states, is to shop at camera repair shops. Those who specialize in old cameras and have old film cameras hanging from there straps from the ceiling.. I have one near where I used to work, that had all sorts of filters, boxes of 6, 7 and 8. I went through with a pocket light, and bought a dozen at $7 each, all in like new condition. The owner never thought anybody would want such a non standard size...
