hoppyman Posted October 4, 2011 Share #21 Posted October 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Billib look at the WPF QR bracket. It slides and clamps onto the vertical arm of the L bracket. The more complex and expensive semicircular flash brackets can be made to work too but you need to orient them differently due to clearance limitations using the compact M9 and its manual focus and aperture lenses. For those you also need a rail (the ones meant for panos etc) which can be mounted to the vertical arm or the base. Take a look at the Off camera flash gear video linked from the main RRS page and all will become clear. I recommend the cheaper, simpler WPF bracket and I use mine with a Nikon SC17 lead. The How do you attach a flash to the Left Side Dovetail Bracket?Didn't know it was a Flash Bracket as well. Don't see anything in their catalog. RoySmith Posted October 4, 2011 Share #23 Posted October 4, 2011 How do you attach a flash to the Left Side Dovetail Bracket?Didn't know it was a Flash Bracket as well. Don't see anything in their catalog. RRS makes a flash bracket that attaches to the side of any of their L-Plates. It's solid and folds up nice and small. Its called the Wedding Pro Flash Bracket with Quick-Release. I've got the older model without the Quick Release.

Washington Posted October 7, 2011 Share #25 Posted October 7, 2011 billib: Sorry not to get back to you but I have been off-line for awhile. You make your own flash bracket by attaching a suitable bar and shoe to a small RRS dovetail clamp. I’ve cut the bottom off some ‘’L’’ brackets and just used the riser and hot shoe. You bolt the bar to the RRS tripod threads.
billib Posted October 7, 2011 Share #26 Posted October 7, 2011 Yah, I like doing the same things. If it doesn't fit, use a bigger hammer. In your case, a saw.
Washington Posted October 7, 2011 Share #27 Posted October 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) billib, I just took a quickie shot to show what I mean. Note the small screw to the rear of the large mounting nut on the Leica… this insures the rig dosn't rotate with a heavy flash. The Ricoh has a cut off bottom with a RRS Leica side-mount attached. That’s a $30 accessory fish-eye screwed on a NEX….. it will not make the lens hall-of-fame I do believe.

billib Posted October 7, 2011 Share #29 Posted October 7, 2011 I like that, its pretty ingenious. Thanks for the photo. It kind of reminds me of the way flash photography used to be. You usually had to make whatever you wanted if it wasn't a simple stock flash attachment.
pelagia Posted October 8, 2011 Share #30 Posted October 8, 2011 I just took a quickie shot to show what I mean. Slightly offtopic: Washington, I see you use Vivitar 2800 with M9. Can you comment on this? In particular, how do you live with auto-off every 90 seconds or so. Thanks.
Washington Posted October 8, 2011 Share #31 Posted October 8, 2011 Oh, I just bought that flash at a garage sale for a couple of bucks. I have not used it yet. It was just on the bench and I used it for a prop.
billib Posted October 11, 2011 Share #32 Posted October 11, 2011 Yeah the M8 and M9 base plates are exactly the same. The RRS Grip is awesome, but does add an extra weight to it though - so you really should consider it. Weight for M9-P Base Plate is 6 grams. Weight for RRS Grip/Base Plate is 15.7 grams. MarkP Posted October 12, 2011 Share #33 Posted October 12, 2011 Correction, I think that's 60 gm and 157gm respectively. 6gm is the weight of about 6 raisins. Mark
billib Posted October 12, 2011 Share #34 Posted October 12, 2011 Thank you. The photo of the scales display cut off the "." for "6.0" as well as "15.7" in both photos though I'm not familiar with grams only ounces & pounds so a mistake was easy. The weights above are correct. BTW, I bought the scale just to show the weights. Actually I used this photo opportunity as an excuse to buy that cool scale. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Edit: If anyone would like the weight in ounces just let me know. I can then use the scale a second time. Ha, ha, ha.
billib Posted October 13, 2011 Share #35 Posted October 13, 2011 How about in ounces. RRS Bottom Plate with Grip 5.5 oz and Stock Bottom Plate 2.1 oz. Welcome, dear visitor! billib Posted October 14, 2011 Share #37 Posted October 14, 2011 I'll bet that if you press the "UNIT" button the scale will read out in grams... Regards, Jim Please refer to the first two shots. They are in grams. The decimal points are cut off in the shots. 6.0 and 15.7 grams. Thanks.
-Lss- Posted October 14, 2011 Share #38 Posted October 14, 2011 6.0 and 15.7 grams. Just to make it clear, one ounce is equal to 28.35 grams. Thus, 2.1 oz is about 60 g and 5.5 oz is about 156 g.
billib Posted October 14, 2011 Share #39 Posted October 14, 2011 I wonder why my scale is waaaay off. Maybe I should read the instruction book. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!! I think I'll stick with ounces to avoid reading. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!! Thank you for your input. I'll read.
pico Posted October 17, 2011 Share #40 Posted October 17, 2011 yes. The M8 and M9 base plates are the same. No, RRS has this to say: **FOR LEICA M8 ONLY. FIT ON LEICA M9 IS TOO SNUG. CHOOSE BM9-B FOR LEICA M9.**
