farnz Posted October 27, 2011 Author Share #88 Posted October 27, 2011 ...Actually the sign reads: Nil Sine Nobis, nothing without us. That us, to whom it refers? ... Albert, An alternative translation for Nil Sine Nobis is "Nothing exists without us." This suggests to me that the "us" refers to Mankind in the sense that Mankind creates everything. (I have no desire to enter into a theosophical debate please.) From a linguistical point of view I'm curious because "nobis" is either the dative or ablative case of "nos" (we) and for nos to be the object of the sentence then it should be in the accusative case and should read "Nil Sine Nos". Ah, but what do I know. Pete.
euston Posted October 27, 2011 Share #89 Posted October 27, 2011 From a linguistical point of view I'm curious because "nobis" is either the dative or ablative case of "nos" (we) and for nos to be the object of the sentence then it should be in the accusative case and should read "Nil Sine Nos". Ah, but what do I know. Some Latin prepositions take the ablative case. Sine is one of them. Pro is another as in ora pro nobis.
Alberti Posted October 27, 2011 Share #90 Posted October 27, 2011 ora pro nobis. Well, pray for me . . . and my linguistic comprehension. I only got some 'potjeslatijn', which is the latin doctors and pharmacists learn. Pete, I like your translation. "Nothing exists without us." Well, what would this LFI be without us! Being a bit sole-centric (the Sun in the middle) I had not expected a plural, unless there is more than one Sun. (I keep having fun). I'll post some pictures about the acceptance of Galileo Galilei's revolutionary ideas later on. albert
pop Posted October 27, 2011 Share #91 Posted October 27, 2011 Could be the pluralis maiestatum (the regal plural). The sun would be the absolute authority and lord over all creation. King Louis XIV lived during that time and was called - the Sun King. That motto breathes the right kind of modesty for the Proxy for the power of God. All persons and their spellings are coincidential.
Alberti Posted October 27, 2011 Share #92 Posted October 27, 2011 Hi Pop, I think this conjecture is very true, I was so naughty to think about the priests. But of course - it could as well refer to the sponsor who gave this sun dial. That happened more than once this way. albert
