21 f2.8 ASPH or WATE

For years I have used a 28mm M on my M6 & M7 and have never really had the need to go wider. For use on my M8 I am now considering a 21mm f2.8 ASPH or the WATE. Cost wise I appreciate that the WATE is bit of a bargain, but I am not sure if the filter solution for the WATE is as neat and unobtrusive as that of the 21mm. I have not had the oppertunity to handle the WATE.

Any thoughts from forum members would be much appreciated.

P.S. Leica Solms have had my M8 back for 4 weeks now to make an adjustment on the viewfinder / rangefinder! Amazing! Still no word as to status even after three phone calls. Still, the M7 and Noctilux have come out to play recently. Maybe I will stick with film!

Mark I have the 21mm 2.8 and really it is a gret lens and covers many situations and it is good wide open. It's a tough call since i would like the WATE myself but I don't think I would sell my 21mm for it. I would rather have a straight 15mm like the Zeiss 2.8 in a leica design

I ordered a WATE with the 30% discount so you know where I stand. I still have my film camera along with the M8 so I get everything from 16mm to 28mm with one lens. With my M8 I use my old tri-Elmar quite a bit for daylight shooting. Price of the WATE with 30% discount is very hard to pass up.

I have compared the 21 against the wate and i found the 2,8/21 much better. It has more sharpness / contrast all over the whole picture and the separation of the colours are awesome even in low light or cloudy light. For me this lens alone is worth the leica trip. So it is mine now.

I own the 21 but havent used it much on the M8 (I more often use the 24 because of the internal frame lines).

I also got myself a cv15mm.

I wonder if I should go for the wate instead of those 2 lenses.

I havent decided yet. The 18mm of the wate (24mm FOV) sounds interesting to me and I do not need f2.8 in my 21mm lens (it wouldnt heart though).

On the other side all the open question regarding the wate (big filter, no hood, how to correct yan corners) made me wait with the decision.

If 28mm in film times were all you needed, why would you got for a wate instead of the 21/2.8 which can be found used for 1/2 price of the wate, gives you one faster f-stop and at least the same if not better optical performance?

Also have a look at the 24mm, becasuse you can use it without external viewfinder.

Regards, Tom
