Any late 28 Summilux rumors?

I suspect that for many people, a great advantage of the 28 over the 24 is the fact that it doesn't need an external viewfinder.

So, given that there's a 24 Summilux and a brilliant 28 Summicron, the need for a faster 28 that because of its size would almost inevitably need an external viewfinder would appear to be very limited indeed.

I'd be surprised if they made one.

Makes absolute sense and indeed, the 28mm Summicron is brilliant :-)

We'll see a Summilux 28 when it won't be significantly bulkier than the current Summicron i guess. Leica used to know how to build tiny fast lenses like the Summilux 35 pre-asph in the past. This tradition is still compatible with digital hopefully.

I was actually face-to-face with Leica's Stefan Daniel in 2007 when another forum member (Guy Mancuso) asked about a 28 Summilux. Daniel said "We think f/2 is the best compromise for the 28mm. It is a superb lens, and we don't think we could retain the quality in an f/1.4. And we do have the requirement that it does not block the viewfinder."

Of course, Leica changes its opinions from time to time - but that is the one direct comment on a 28 'lux I've ever heard from Leica.

As to the 35 f/1.4 non-ASPH: a perfect demonstration of the old saying "You can have good, you can have small, and you can have fast. Pick any two."

Personally, I enjoyed it (except for the 1-meter focus limit), but at f/1.4 there were lots of compromises to image quality to get the speed in that small size - intense flare tendencies (both artifacts, and veiling flare), massive coma, etc.

A fun lens for €1000 (and even a workable tool, for wedding photographers seeking "romance") - a joke if Leica asked €3800 for a 28 that performed at that level in the era of ASPH quality.

There are still some basic facts of geometry, which not even the Gnomes can wave away with a magic wand. The thing would need at least a 55mm filter size. You can't pour a pint into a thimble.

My Guess would be a Series VI, as the 24mm is Series VII, and the 21mm is a Series VIII, using Leica's current model.
