barjohn Posted February 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks to a member of this forum I was able to obatin one of the Leica M8 protector 1/2 cases for the camera. I thought I would share my expereinces with it to date and solicit feedback from others so that a prospective buyer could decide whether it was for him or her. When I first got the case I wondered if I had made a mistake. While it was light, it seemed stiff and dare I say ugly? I wasn't sure whether the grip bumps would be of any use or not. I snapped it on the camera and began using it with the case. Over time it has begun to soften in a very nice attractive way molding itself better to the camera (it stood out at first). The built in grips are prefectly placed to support your thumb on the back side and your second and third fingers on the front side. They form a natural resting place for each. This was a surprise to me. The base is a stiff piece that sems to offer protection for the bottom of the camera. The two snaps snap around the hanging strap hinges just perfectly. I had really debated about the Luigi case but been unable to bring myself to pay $250 for one. I have no doubt that his cases are of better quality and materials. However, the Leica case had no snaps in the back or cover to remove or put back or leave dangling. It is quick and easy to remove it from the camera for film or battery replacement. While I don't have a Luigi case I have read here where they can be difficult to take off or put back on. All of the controls on the back or front are readily accessible and usable without removing the case or strap. In conclsuion, I would highly recommend this case for protective purposes as it will shield the camera from unexpected jostles. Maybe a Luigi case would be better but is it $150 better is the question. Perhaps others can chime in on this case or the Luigi case. From a practical standpoint this case appears to be very good. Thinner would have been nicer but then it might not have been as easy to take off and put back on. I like not having anything that snaps on in the back as it would have added bulk without adding any real meaningful protection (I would have had it either dangling or off most of the time). macusque Posted February 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2007 John, thank you for your feedback. I was debating myself between Luigi's wonderful but expensive case and the Leica's regular. I thought go for the Leica's because it's cheaper and it doesn't have any metal snap on the back, but I was wondering about its ergonomics. Your opinion was encouraging, thanks
danielt Posted February 14, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 14, 2007 My M8 fell from a height of 2 meters and aside from scratches in the top plate and of the breakage of the glass of the LDC that shows the battery status, it has continued working without problems : The M8 was protected with a Luigi´s half-case. In a optics shop close to my home has placed a new glass in 24 hours (12 €), and I am already shooting pictures with my M8 The half-case from Luigi mis a good protector
Bill W Posted February 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 14, 2007 John, I bought the Leica case as well. It certainly is easy to get of and on again. Like you I thought I would not ever use the back cover on the Luigi case so I went for th Leica and am very pleased. Popflash has them for $99 or at least they did last week. After I took the "safety sticker" off the bottom plate I wanted something to protect the camera.
barjohn Posted February 14, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 14, 2007 For beauty, I'm sure Luigi's cases cannot be beat. But if your primary concern is protection the Leica case works very well and with the need to take it on and off to remove your images (whether taking out the SD card, replacing-charging the battery or connecting the camera to a PC/MAC) I didn't want this to be a struggle every time. The posts I have read on the Luigi case all seemed to complain about the difficulty of removing the case becasue of how tight it fits. With the Leica case being open in the back (at the top) it is quite easy to remove. I further did not want the snaps in the back but that is just me. gravastar Posted March 27, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 27, 2007 ................When I first got the case I wondered if I had made a mistake. While it was light, it seemed stiff and dare I say ugly? I wasn't sure whether the grip bumps would be of any use or not. I snapped it on the camera and began using it with the case. Over time it has begun to soften in a very nice attractive way molding itself better to the camera (it stood out at first). I put one or two applications of Neatsfoot oil on the case before I started to use it. In particular on the leather that clips around the camera straps. It softened up well and I find the 1/2 case very convenient. The inside front of the case is wearing smooth patches on the covering of the camera body, but that doesn't really matter. Bob.
