Eikonphoto Posted February 14, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry, but I don't understand the Hermes red leather reference. I might buy a red leather coat, shoes etc., but cameras are a work tool for myself and all the other female photographers I know. We have all the same criteria as any other professional photographer would. Having said that, if there rainbow color M8's and they were half the price of the 'regular' colors ..... I would get one in every color ....

wparsonsgisnet Posted February 14, 2007 Share #23 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Can someone explain why Hermes failed to attract more M shooters with red leather ... ? Â I think this joke has many levels and meanings: 1. The marriage between Hermes and Leica didn't make a lot of sense. 2. A-la-carte variations of Leica's make some sense when one changes viewfinder magnification, but not necessarily when they are superficial. 3. Hermes might have induced superficial or "stylish" variations in Leica's that would attract users. Â I hope the 3rd meaning, if I get it right, was not directed at any particular sex, or sexual orientation. Â What I think would make sense for this Forum, would be to remain very careful in our postings. In the past, we have driven away members, both male and female, by insensitive (and to my eye, not particularly funny) jokes and/or comments. Â Others have commented on the civility of this forum in comparison to many others found on the Web. Â I find this forum essential to my imaging work -- the assistance I have received made it possible to get images I liked within days of receiving the M8, and also allowed me to prepare for it by pre-ordering things like filters, a magnifier, and a grip. Â I don't have any notion of how female members might contribute to this forum -- because they have been driven away previously. Â And, my favorite quote from Hill Street Blues: "Let's be careful out there." Â Regards
sdai Posted February 14, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Thanks a lot for your comments, Bill. Â My post was really just a "sigh" ... without any deep thinking. It certainly is not directed at anyone, maybe even slightly off topic but, I've always wondered ... if Leica had ever made any sound business judgement in terms of product development and broadening the range of their offerings, more folks - females included for sure - will certainly be attracted to purchase their products and therefore, become visitors to this particular site ... and they won't be hung on the tree of just a - M8? ken_tanaka Posted February 14, 2007 Share #25 Â Posted February 14, 2007 I think most women have the rather good sense to stay away from equipment forums like this. Â Precisely, and they're generally far better photographers for allocating their time to photography rather than most of the silly chatter found on Internet forums. wparsonsgisnet Posted February 14, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Simon, I chose your post as a stepping off point. Thanks for not seeing it as a criticism. Â I almost posted in the Customer Forum, on Andy's thread about female members, but decided to post here, instead. Â In the past we have had a couple of female members who were interested in items technical -- and posted many discerning and informative comments. I am deeply sorry that they are not longer either lurking or posting, because I gained much from their posts. Â Cameras may fit the category of "boys' toys" but that's not necessarily the whole truth. One of these former members was even a Leica dealer. I was good friends with another (male) poster who is no longer here, and I miss trading presences with him. Â What we would benefit from is more members who want or use Leica's. I hope many will be female.
sdai Posted February 14, 2007 Share #27 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This forum is good, Bill ... 'cause people can really talk to each other, and there're signs that Leica is listening. I'm very satisfied with the results from the age poll for Guys' birthday, so our ages average around 49, right? then I know I don't have to deal with posts such as "Mom, I'm on the Internet!" carcam Posted February 14, 2007 Share #31 Â Posted February 14, 2007 HiiI've had my M8 for a month or so now ..... and that makes me one of three women on the forum with an M8. Enjoying it, although this is my off season for shooting .... so I'm not out there as much as I will be soon. It's lovely to be liberated from the D2X and all those heavy lenses I normally cart around all day. Still working on my lens line up, down to the 28mm versus 35 lux quandry. Â Hey Karen- I share your 28 vs 35 lux quandry. Please share any insight you may have. I would post a new thread in that regard but since I am the one who posted rangefinder focusing problems because of putting my finger in the wrong place, I've lost all credibility... Welcome. I would post a new thread in that regard but since I am the one who posted rangefinder focusing problems because of putting my finger in the wrong place, I've lost all credibility... Welcome. Â Although there is plenty of credibility on this forum, the reason most know the source of your problem, is that they may, just may have done it themselves. The only insight I can share is that which has kindly been passed on to me via the thread about summilux versus summicron 35mm. I am very much used to the digital crop, and tend toward's wider shooting. That personal style thought is what leads me to the 28mm . However, the fact I cannot find one anywhere in stock is a bit of a problem. Not much help, but I think it comes down to personal style of shooting. bradreiman Posted February 14, 2007 Share #33 Â Posted February 14, 2007 i think there are less women here because of frequently sexist "jokes" etc. i once posted on my girlfriends computer and her screenname. i received a few really sexist and condescending replies. not gonna name names but i see it quite a bit. maybe those in "LOL i love lucy crowd LOL" should get with the times. my girlfriend posts pictures in the photo forum quite often and has received pm's which were obviously an attempt at getting a date, not discussing photography. sad....b
carstenw Posted February 14, 2007 Share #34 Â Posted February 14, 2007 There are also less women here because there are less Leica M8-owning women than men. I don't want to guess why that is, but it is clear that it is true. What would interest me more is whether we manage to attract a representative crowd. I wonder if our dealers have a rough idea of what the proportion is? I will ask my dealer the next time I am there.

carstenw Posted February 14, 2007 Share #36 Â Posted February 14, 2007 Having read your posts in the post, I am certain you don't mean it badly, but "camera whores" and "sex offenders"? I can think of a lot of ways to phrase that better. "Tech heads" or "camera nerds" are much nicer terms to me, and wanting a date (however annoying it can be to the recipient) has nothing to do with being a "sex offender". Really. Back to the drawing board on that one.

Karen,  I had the same quandary and decided for the 28/2.0. Very happy I did. Lovely lens, great FOV and I can always crop if I want to go narrower. Photo Village had a few last week when I stopped by. Email Rich and ask him what he has in stock.
