High there

does anybody have experience with either the 1.25 or 1.4 magnifier from Leica. I want to use one on my M8.2 and 50mm Cron. What I would like to know is what is your experience with a magnifier. Is it helpful with focussing? And which one would you recommend, the 1.25 or the 1.4?

Regards

Marco

What is the reason you want to use one? A magnifier may be helpful - but has drawbacks too.

First get the diopter compensation for your viewfinder correct, make sure you have the correct focussing technique. For a 50 mm Summicron you will not need a magnifier then for 95% of the cases. 1.4 x is far too much, it will lose too much contrast.

Btw, Leica does not make any lens called Cron....

Should you be near Hoogvliet where I work, you can always pop in to try the 1.25, although not in October as I will be off photographing Chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains :)

I'm fighting a rearguard action against these horrid abbreviations...;)

Well, I guess this is the opposite of an abbreviation; adding two unnecessary letters. You have a dual personality.:)

Well I'm sorry that I offended anyone with my poor English and abbreviations.

I only wanted an answer to my question from other Leica users but I will not bother you anymore.

And, to answer your question, only you will be able to tell if a magnifier works well or not. Eyes are tricky and results are not predictable and involve tradeoffs. I own the M8.2 and the Leica 1.25 mag but now rarely use use it. The 50 frame lines are big enough for me and I like the contrast better without the mag. You might feel otherwise. Maybe a dealer would allow you to try one out.

Jeff

PS Most importantly, make sure your vision is completely corrected before you even attempt using a magnifier. Otherwise, it will only magnify problems.

I found the megapearls magnifier to be rather useless. It takes away contrast, introduces colour abarration and vagueness in general. Also, I lost view on the outer corners of the finder. It has a new owner now. Instead I admitted to myself that my eyes are becoming less flexible and replaced the diopter lens with a slightly stronger one. It is a much better solution than the megapearls, in spite of it having diopter adjustment as well. My preference is for 24mm to 50 mm lenses.

A few minutes ago I tried the X1.4 magnifier on my M8.2 with a 5cm lens fitted.

With my eyeglasses removed I can see the complete 75mm frame, but nothing wider.

With eyeglasses in place, I can barely see the top and bottom marks of the 75mm frame simultaneously.

Best regards,

Doug

Try this: 1.25x Viewfinder Magnifier for Leica (Black) - Accessories

I picked one up last week for my 50mm elmar and summicron, I have excellent eyesight but have found it very handy for rapid focus and follow focus.

Having spent most of my life shooting SLRs I do check around the frame lines when I forget to take it off when shooting with the 28mm or the 35mm lenses. It never makes contact with my eye socket - unlike Nikon's DK17 which is very uncomfortable.

I hope this helps...

(I'm a long time lurker and this is my first post. I'm a press photographer and shoot for fun mostly with my Leica M8 but do use it for features after I've bagged shots on the Nikon cameras. A very enjoyable tool.).

The purpose of the magnifier is to make the focusing patch larger, which for people that have problems with longer lenses makes it a useful accessory. I wear glasses with a very high correction. The maximum correction available with either Leica or 3rd party diopter lenses is + or - 3. For me, that leaves the patch still slightly fuzzy. Therefore, the magnifier, either Leica or 3rd party version (that is what I have) really helps when I use my 90mm Tele-Elmarit. As for framing, well I do the best that I can, given the cutoff at the viewfinder edges. Whether one chooses a 1.25 or1.5 is a matter of personal choice.

I regularly use the Leica 1.4 magnifier on my M8.2, with 35mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux, I can see the 50mm framelines and the 35mm lines form the outer boundary of the view - I find it very helpful.

Ps Hello Dwyersean - welcome to the forum !!
