Digilux 3

Just want to clarify something. I remembered that someone in the forum said Digilux 3 is better than 5D and D200. Just tried it, and made a side by side comparison, and here is the result from D3. IMHO it is good, but not as good as 5D or D200. I think this would be helpful for people tring to decide to get a D3 or not, comparing to Canon and Nikon...

Best,

Without wanting to get into a mine is bigger than yours contest.. (or anything else) Having read a LOT of Digilux 3 messages on this forum, I think it is safe to say that I have generally not seen messages saying it is "better", different yes, but not particularly better, actually to me it seems that the discussion have mainly been focused on what would make people want to own the one camera over the other.

Well just my 2 cents, not saying it is better, just saying that "for me" it works well and does what I expected it to do.

I own the DigiLux-3. Its great for general photography.

I also own the Canon 5D, the 1D2, the Nikon D2X and, my film M7. Each is a tool that has a place for certain kinds of photography and a thread that talks about one being "better" than the other is rather silly.

John, I totally agree with you. It's a pretty silly comment and comparison. I apologize. I am just an ignorant doctor with unkempt hair and dressed shabbily in corduroy. I have seen many hostile messages in this forum against people making criticisms or questionning Leica’s. Not too surprised this happen to me. Sorry, you great Leica/Magnum photographers. I will remain as quiet as my MPs.

Best,

R

I agree with John -

I shoot with a 5D, and the general lens is a 24 - 70 2.8L. The dlux3 I have is a great carry around camera, but is dwarfed (in more ways than one) by the 5D. But, I love the dlux3, and it's in my pocket every day.

quite a bizarre thread, I dont recall anyone saying D3 is better than 5D

maybe you can point me to that ?

I think for our interests, the comparisons are better with APS C cameras

better than 5D is a tall statement that I wouldnt hold too

Sounds like an unsuccessful fishing trip there, Russel!!!....Hostile no one has been hostile towards you, please respond to me personally if you feel left out.....aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhgh

Russel, I don´t think it´s hostile to ask you to post the whole comparison, if not to show what your main complaints with the Digilux 3 are. Noise, resolution, etc ? Probably hard to compete with full-frame sensors. Style ? No competition ;) Optics, sharpness, colours ? Are we talking about kit lenses here ?

Don´t worry Rusell. I agree with you. I think that you have tried the cam and simply you don´t like it or don´t feel good with it. For me it´s ok. It´s your opinion. There are several test and galeries in the web about D3 and pana version. So every one that need a test or comparatives between cameras have it in the web.In my case I don´t buy this cam after read and see lot of this test, comparatives, see the final result: the pics, and have the cam in my hands and feel absolutly unconfortable with it. I think that many people don´t want others to tell them any compliment about his beloved cam. The election of a cam -I think- have a lot of "fall in love with it, or with Leica, pentax, canon...."

I agree to disagree :)

Of course, you are entitled to your opinion. It's just not a very fruitful thread if nobody states just what they are comparing on the cameras.

I understand that Nikon D200 and Canon 5D sensors are superior, but I think the Digilux 3 doesn't make me look like a standard wedding photographer (meaning it's not such a generic predictable camera design of today), and that's important to ME. Also, it's built like a tanks with a magnesium frame :) The kit lens is probably the best kit lens out there. I also like the manual aperture ring around the lens. Makes things pure and old-school, which I like to pursue. More substantial is the automatic dust remover and a flash with multiple settings. I also like the shutter speeds around the shutter release (easily found). So I like it more than the others. I don't like the price however.

As long as I constantly see much more beautiful pictures taken with this camera than I have taken with it, it will work well for me until I have learnt more of the art.

I'll go you one further: If the L1/D3 didn't have these "old-school" features, I wouldn't have bought it, plain and simple. I am most likely a poster-boy for Panasonic / Leica's target demographic group for this camera (mid-40s, semi-affluent, brought up with 35mm SLRs in the '70s, etc.) and the reason I hadn't purchased any "serious" digital cameras prior to the L1 last December was that I didn't like the plastic-like bodies, "push a button, spin a dial" method of adjusting settings or feel comfortable using autofocus, programmed exposure, matrix metering, etc. that have become ubiquitous since the late '80s.

For me, the L1/D3 is a perfect blend of today's technology with yesterday's functionality and even if they are better perfomers, I have no interest in owning any of Canon or Nikon's current range of dSLR cameras. YMMV, of course, and I certainly wouldn't mean to suggest that what's right for me is right for you, but for those of us who belong to the (admittedly small but larger than I believe people realize) niche demographic group targeted by Panasonic and Leica, the L1/D3 is nearly a perfect match for our tastes and preferences.

When people share personal opinions whether they are bias or not, or who would have a right/authority to state which is better or worse in using various equipments, others truly count on those opinions when it comes to shopping digital cameras for themselves. However, wouldn't you agree that some people are taking better photographs with disposable cameras at the same time others struggle to take better pictures with M8? I guess the word, "hostile," began when someone said hey, I found better cameras that are "better" than Leica.

Although the bettle here are not even compared/"hostile" to the DPReview Leica forums, it is still the matter of apples and oranges.

Well put, Jeffrey. My point exactly if I didn´t think in Norwegian and write in English :)

The only thing I didn´t get was the "YMMV"..

I also agree with you, Tommy and Rob. I am bias and I am not a pro. The Leica D3 just feels good and serves my needs (I don´t print A2 posters anyway).

That's what I was about to say--pretty much word-for-word. Add in the amazing quality of the kit lens, and you have THE definitive rationale for owning this camera. For those of us who feel strongly about the experience of photography, none of the D3's relative technical shortcomings (sensor size, focus points, etc...) are serious enough to overcome the fact that it's the only DSLR on the market that feels like an old, manual SLR.

The R10 may blow the D3 out of the water (someday). I hope it does. Until then, the D3 is the only game in town for me.
