davidrc Posted September 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know i'm new to the M and all.....but have I missed a trick? I have seen a quote about a small crack defect on the M8 body, low down on the side under the baseplate is a reasonably common thing which is sufficient to need a repair. Anyone know of a thread or status to shed some light on this?
Advertisement Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Hi davidrc, Take a look here M8 body crack. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2011 It is not common. Reason for your query? You have one - send to Leica!
davidrc Posted September 12, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted September 12, 2011 Thanks for the reply. M8 seen for sale, could make a good second body. Never heard of the issue. Any idea what causes it and the cure?

earleygallery Posted September 12, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2011 Search 'base plate failure' though it's not the base plate that failed, rather the camera body. Not heard of any cases of this for a while, so I assume Leica have sorted the problem out.
jaapv Posted September 12, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 12, 2011 Thanks for the reply. M8 seen for sale, could make a good second body. Never heard of the issue. Any idea what causes it and the cure? There have been a few cases in one series of cameras. I would suggest to steer clear of such a camera, M8s come to the market regularly often at quite reasonable prices; there is no need to buy into a problem. Normally Leica would treat this as a courtesy repair, but if they determine that the cause was abuse of the camera, like falling whilst on a tripod, you are looking at a 1000 Euro repair. Not worth the risk.

framestore Posted September 13, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 13, 2011 You can easily buy good condition 2nd-hand body from Leica uk dealers with decent warranty cover. These dealers are my favorites; Ffordes (link) RedDot (link)
