Lens waiting list.. have to start over.

My neighbor told me my dealer (Cooters in Dallas) has went out of business. Their phone doesn't seem to work so could be true.

Anyway, I've been on a waiting list since April... looks like I have to start over.

I'm going to start calling a big list of Leica dealers. Any suggestions on a dealer that may be faster than others. I hear some that take a deposit get things done faster. The dealer here in Dallas seemed to be one of the slower ones as he told me they haven't had a shipment in all year...( that was back in April).

I'm looking for the 35 lux FLE, 50 Lux and maybe the 50 Noticlux but definitely the 35/50 luxes.

I'd try Tamarkin or Ken Hansen, both are really prompt with responses and honest about availability.

You might also contact PopFlash Photo; they have been able to deliver scarce Leica lenses to me with minimal waiting time and have always been candid about availability. A deposit helps...

I am very sorry to hear of the demise of Cooter's Village Camera.

Kirk and Chriss and their father before them ran an excellent and knowledgeable business.

I'm sure there are other camera stores as honest and well-run as Cooter's, but there aren't many.

If the store hadn't seen any Leica product for a period of time, it's the fault of demand outstripping supply. Cooter's was a very good and responsible Leica dealer. They ordered well and were always among the first to receive product when it became available.

Yeah, Don't quote me on it.. I have yet to confirm it. But they are not answering the phone number on their website.

I took your advice.

For anyone looking they require a deposit ... 35 lux $2,000, 50 lux -$1000 and Noctilux -$5000.

Here's what they say for waiting times:

For the 35mm Summilux #11663, we currently have 10 pre-order/deposits (you are the 10th on the list with your deposit order). We have one lens arriving every 2-3 weeks on average, so I'd estimate about 5-8 months before we received 10 more lenses. However, between March and early June, we did not receive any of them, as Leica USA had not received any from Leica Germany during that time. So, it is possible the wait could be shorter or longer than estimated.

The 50mm Summilux lenses are arriving at about the same pace as the 35m Summilux. We are accepting pre-order and $1000 deposits (also non-refundable, but can be used towards any serial numbered Leica item). We currently have 7 pre-orders/deposits, and we'd estimate about 4-7 months for the arrival of 8 more lenses.

For the 50mm Noctilux, we are accepting pre-orders and $5000 deposits. there has not really been any consistency with the arrival of this lens, so it's hard to say when we may have another lens arriving. The soonest time we've had between lenses is 2 months, and the longest time between lenses has bee about 8-10 months. Our last one arrived less than two weeks ago which fulfilled our only pre-order, and while a pre-order/deposit at this time would guarantee the next one we receive, no idea how soon we'll receive another one.

I know this is a well-reputed store, but personally I would refuse to pay a sizeable deposit on an item that the store can sell within minutes should I renege on my order. Thousands of dollars in hand earn the store free interest and give me as customer the feeling of being taken advantage of by the tight supply position. Fortunately I have dealt with more customer-friendly dealers until now. I would be quite offended if it happened to me and I would withdraw all my business .

Perhaps I was just lucky; I was able to get a 50mm Summilux ASPH and a 35mm Summicron ASPH from PopFlash in less than two weeks this spring - perhaps the waiting list was shorter then, or they may have had some order cancellations. In any event, I wish you luck in finding the M lenses you are seeking.

try eplevine. they appear to have a black 35mm summilux and a silver 50mm summilux in stock. or at least it seems you can start the process online of putting them into a cart and not immediately receive an "out of stock" pop-up.

btw, i am also a fan of popflash, but prefer to try all other sources first before tying up a deposit.

Obviously my preferred dealer list is European, but in general my best dealers are those where you can drop in, be greeted by name, and have a Leica natter and a coffee.I am fortunate that I have three of those within an hour"s drive. And then there are the good ones that get mentioned alll the time in rhis forum.

Maybe European habits and dealers are different from USA... but personally I would never consider to have business with a dealer unknown to me that makes such statements... I'm prone to think that if ought to be a customary attitude in Europe... well it would be better that lenses' orders would be managed directly by Leica home store with a minimum of additional CRM... :o
