Irwin Puts is a guest of the Leica Fellowship meeting in Oxfordshire this weekend. This evening we have an open session discussion with him. He rarely attends such events so it is an unusual opportunity to question him. For those unable to be present, are there any sensible questions members of this forum might like me to ask him?

In his review of Summarit lenses on his website, in his concluding remarks he said: 'I will publish a fourth part about the Summarit lenses, covering background unsharpness as created by the Summicron and the Summarit lenses.'

I would be interested to know if this is still intended.

Best regards,

Nick.

My question would be, in light of it being self published (and self financed), would he consider publishing his latest book in Kindle format?

I've just read this on his website...

"Many readers have asked for an electronic version of the Leica Compendium, Basically there are two options: PDF and Epub.

PDF allows you to create nice design and incorporate as many pictures as you wish. But security is a serious problem. Downloading a PDF with protection is simply to crack and is for most situations a bad option. Epub is more secure, but the epub format does not allow for nice design and many pictures. So the basic choice is this: epub with simple text and some images, and PDF with sophisticates layout, but easy to copy and distribute."

I fully understand his reluctance to use PDF, but it is possible to incorporate many pictures in a Kindle book. Could I suggest that he looks at Martin Evening's Lightroom for Photographers book - a free sample is available from the Amazon website.

Nick, in a useful seminar session this afternoon I put your question to Erwin. He confessed that he has a huge backlog of work but still intends to complete and publish Part IV of his Summarit report.

Will there be an electronic version for folks who recently bought one of his two books?

K-H.

Several of you raised this question. Erwin has considered the proposition, has taken advice and has, reluctantly, decided not to do so. Sorry!

Steve, Erwin retraced his arguments you summarized above. Regarding use of the Kindle route, I sensed that he considered it made little economic sense for him at a time when he has much work scheduled in the future. It really was a rare opportunity to have time with him and discuss freely so many matters of mutual interest.

He was extremely careful to be as accurate as possible with his answers and was as frank as he could be when comparing Leica equipment with competitors'. Erwin Puts comes across as a genuinely modest man with a great depth of knowledge about matters Leica. All attendees were equally impressed with his generous contributions. I hope we might see more of him at a future event.

Tonight we have the official 'audience with Erwin Puts' event. If any significant new points emerge I will report back later.

Would like to know his academic background. Also, any plans for another book.

#12 (I am afraid you didn't reveal a recognizable first name);

Last night I did ask him about his background and was surprised to learn that his university degree was in 'economics' (his brief label). He is clearly a highly intelligent man with a wealth of relevant knowledge at his finger tips! He was seldom searching for facts, despite the discussion being conducted in English as opposed to Dutch, his native language. More might emerge tonight.
