Jamie Roberts Posted February 12, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had my original one from November till January; had at least 4K shots on it and did four jobs with it (which is a lot for new tech--I like to learn what I'm doing before I take it "on the road")... Â You know I'm going to say this, but the M8 is a great camera.
Giulio Zanni Posted February 12, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have the same relationship with the M8 that I had with my M film cameras. I think that there are other cameras that can do what the M8 does and maybe even better. However, the M8 has immediately become part of me. I can't think of me without it now. scott kirkpatrick Posted February 12, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Nope. I've had mine (second generation) for about 4 weeks and a little over 1000 exposures. The only surprises have been self-induced -- I left the power on and the timer set to rundown and had a not expected dead camera the following morning. Charging the battery restored everything as intended. I like the color and love the detail. So far every old lens I've tried on it has focused from infinity to its closest intended distance and I have had no back or front focus problems that I can detect. Â The emphasis on exposing problems on this forum is to solve them, not to scare people away. A problem which can be reliably demonstrated can be fixed. So it is healthy for people to shoot with the lens cap on to see what the noise floor looks like, for example, and that produced a little surprise, to be fixed in 1.10. In the two weeks after shipment and the two weeks after firmware 1.09 was released, Leica got the benefit of a 1500 unit beta test. They could never have afforded that much testing, and engineers just can't imaging doing some of the things that customers will try. I hope the two weeks after firmware 1.10 is released is less dramatic, but I am sure that there will be things found that can eventually get fixed. In particular, we know that there are inconsistent or incomplete lens detection problems -- things not in the EXIF for some lenses, sometimes the results depend on the frame lever position, sometimes not -- and those have not gotten any attention until now. But if they are not all caught in the course of doing 1.10, they will be soon after. Â scott
flavio Posted February 12, 2007 Share #25 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I was going to say i would buy a second one but realized i already have a 2nd one. LOLÂ Â That's great, Guy! :-)) I have another kind of problem: cannot choose between one M3 and a M8. I think I have to choose between 2 views of a secret. Guest black_jack Posted February 12, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted February 12, 2007 It's pointless to ask for proof that there are any working M8s out there. Even a ratio of "only" 10 percent of defective or malfunctioning M8s would be totally unacceptable for q/c in most fields of manufactoring, let alone the Leica myth. jonoslack Posted February 12, 2007 Share #27  Posted February 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Andreas I got mine early November, and it went back to Solms for the update in January.  I've had it freeze a couple of times (like most other cameras), but that's the only bad news.  I still get an 'oomph' in my stomach when I look at the files.  it's a joy to use  I took 4000 images before the 'fix', and i've taken 1500 since - I just love it.  I'm now thinking of selling all my other gear to buy another body.  Leica have been communicative, polite, cheerful, helpful, responsive, both on the phone and via email.  What more can I say? Â Flavio Considering you can get a good working M3 for under $1000, more like under $700 ( not a collector type), why not get both. In fact drop me a email and I might be able to hook you up with a M3 single stroke that was just CLA'ed. Â Oh I see you're in Italy, never mind. Good luck. LichMD Posted February 12, 2007 Share #29 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I'm a bit late to this thread but I'll add my 2 cents. I've had this camera for a total of 6 days, I've taken 350 + photos in that time period. I've had no freezes, no lock ups, no sensor cleaning problems, no SD format or use issues, no calls to Leica. Zero problems that I didn't induce my self (knock on wood). Â Most importantly, I can't wait to use it. It's completely reawakened my love of photography. If you can afford it and love RF photography or you're looking to get into DRF this is a great camera.
chris_wade Posted February 12, 2007 Share #30 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Is 2 possible: one possible is M8 go after time bat. This I thing is not most one possible. Other more possible is firmware 1,09 what makes to take away one prablem (grin blob and striking from lights) put after few more prablems. If is ever to come 1,10 will be take away all this mabe dozan prablems, only hope will not put after two dozans of more:eek: What, exactly, are you trying to say, my friend? Eoin Posted February 12, 2007 Share #31 Â Posted February 12, 2007 What, exactly, are you trying to say, my friend? Â Allow me help you...... Â one possibility is the m8 develops problems with time, I don't think this is the main problem, but perhaps the v1.09 firmware which was designed to take away the problems of green blobs and banding has introduced a few more. If version 1.10 will ever be introduced perhaps it will remove the dozen problems but introduce two dozen more
chris_wade Posted February 12, 2007 Share #32 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Thank-you for all the positive feedback in regard to "Worried about M8". I bought a D-Lux 2 and then returned to Camera West and bought the Digilux 2 last year, my entry into "Leica" world. The lens on the Digilux 2 is so fantastic, I can only imagine what the M lenses are capable of. I want a M8, was on the list 10-06, then I read all the fall-out and cancelled my order. I've even signed up and paid for the class Leica is offering June 9th, I hope to have the camera by then, hopefully with the updated software. A special thank-you to Guy and Andy for their leadership and dedication to Leica. I love this forum and it's learning curve! Chris Wade
smsmd Posted February 12, 2007 Share #33 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I purchased my M8 from CameraWest and have been happy with the support I received from the dealer and from Leica directly. Â I had no prior M camera and had to buy all the M gear from scratch, so for me it was a large committment, but I love the camera and thus far have had no issues at all. Â I am planning 2 trips to Yosemite next week just to gain more experience with the camera ( I was inspired by the recent Yosemite trip thread here on this forum). Â From an amateur, I enjoy this camera immensely and have no regrets. Â steve
bradreiman Posted February 12, 2007 Share #34 Â Posted February 12, 2007 love mine no problems. you'll note that the one detractor in this thread is blasko who is an admitted film purist/non-owner of the m8. most ranting i have read regarding the m8 comes from folks who don't own one. enjoy....b
Jager Posted February 12, 2007 Share #35 Â Posted February 12, 2007 The only problem I've had is not having enough time to use it. Â It is an astonishingly good camera. Far and away the most exciting I have ever used. I love it! Â Jeff
4season Posted February 12, 2007 Share #36 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Sadly for Leica, all I read about here in the forum is problems. jcbjr Posted February 13, 2007 Share #38 Â Posted February 13, 2007 2 m8's, both working fine. one from early batch, like dean wormer's wife, now on scheduled vacation in solms for a month; the other, late model, doing great as its replacement. the hysteria of a relatively small (i think) number of failures has gotten magnified by the web, as often happens, imo. johnbuckley Posted February 13, 2007 Share #40 Â Posted February 13, 2007 The month my M8 was in Solms was worse than the month of October, when I anticipated buying one. Why? Because I had had mine for two months of sheer delight. I have had virtually no problems with mine (other than having to part with it, on Leica's instruction, not from my perceived need. Just got it back: hasn't left my side for days.) The files it produces are gloriously rich with texture and detail -- it is better than my M7, I believe, because my scanning of my slides is less than perfect. Â There is anxiety that gets created because we hear on the Forum what I presume to be the majority of the problems identified. I am grateful for those who post the problems they have, because the creativity of this group has solved many problems, and headed off my own. Â But all in, this is a glorious camera. Dive in.
