cduff Posted February 12, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm debating between the 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical and the 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical. Is there any significant difference (besides the obvious focal length) other than $500?
Shootist Posted February 12, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I'm debating between the 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical and the 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical. Is there any significant difference (besides the obvious focal length) other than $500? I'm thinking the same thing. The one selling point for the 24mm is that the M8 has frame lines for it, and of course the $500. When you take the 24 and X by the 1.33 you come up with a 32mm lens but with the 21mm you have a 28mm. Which one do you think you'll need the most. Personally I think I'm going with the 24mm. I'll know when I get the cash to buy one of them. Also the WATE is out of the question for me just because of the f/4 aperture. I would rather have a fixed FL of 16 or 18 in a f/2.8 aperture. Eoin Posted February 12, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 12, 2007 Putts has an article on the 24mm, he rates it very highly suggesting every M user should have one. I didn't listen to him and chose the 21 purely for the focal length. I wanted wide and with the 1.33x crop 21 = 28 and 24 = 32 approx. I'm not disappointed in any way with my choice. Distortion is very well controlled and it's very sharp. Sean Reid also has some articles on the 21's and 24's which may help you decide.
carcam Posted February 12, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have the 21 and sometimes wish for the 24... It would be nice to see the framelines in the viewfinder (24) but the 21 is close to the full view anyway and I got the VT 28mm viewfinder for $140 but it's one more thing to put on after switching lenses. I find I used 28mm a lot with my dslr and p&s but 24 (32) is so close, a couple steps back and it's about the same. Â Sorry- I know I have offered no help. If I got the 24 instead of the 21 I probably would have wished I got the 21... Good luck.
glenerrolrd Posted February 12, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have found the 24 framelines to be overly conserative . I went to my Leica 28mm external finder and found the FOV to be almost perfect. It is also quite a bit easier to compose without the distractions of the focus square and the other framelines for the 35mm. If you can get a chance try a 24mm on the M8 and test the FOV . This might impact your decision.
Woody Campbell Posted February 12, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have both and like them both. I use the 24 with an external finder (the Voigtlander 28 works very well with it) because I have trouble finding the 24mm framelines through the viewfinder. Â I use the 24 much more than the 21 - more than any other lens in fact. This purely a matter of personal preference for the focal length - both lenses perform brilliantly. Â In my film days I was a wide shooter - 28 mm got more use than any other lens. I guess I like tthe 24 because its almost as wide but is easier to control. Â Yes, I recently published a review of 24/25s and have also published the working draft of the 21 mm lenses review. The two wide Elmarits have similar characters and your decision really may be as simple as choosing which field of view works for you. The fact that the 24 does not require an external finder (although I recommend one) will be an advantage for some. Â 24/25s tested were: Leica 24/2.8 Elmarit Aspherical, Zeiss 25/2.8 Biogon, Voigtlander 25/4.0 Skopar 21s tested: Leica 21/2.8 Elmarit Aspherical, Zeiss 21/2.8 Biogon, Zeiss 21/4.5 C Biogon, Voigtlander 21/4.0 Skopar, Kobalux 21/2.8 Â Cheers, Â Sean
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 12, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I had both at one time and they both are extremely good lenses , I did sell the 24mm since I could not see the framelines with the 1.25 on. On the 21mm i leave the 1.25 on but use the external finder. Just works out better for me like that.
MP3 Posted February 12, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 12, 2007 What other focal lengths do you have? I go for the 21 (FOV 28mm) because this is my prefered WA focal length for landscape and people in the mid of some event / occasion. Â I'm pretty a 28/50 man on film, sufficient for 80% of my need. That should explain my choice very well. Â I've considered the 24mm as well, finally drop it and go for the 21mm. The 24 is bit too close to my 28 Cron, which I love so much. If I did not have the 28 Cron and want a simple arsenal, I 'll go for the 24mm. Â Cheers Matthew
nryn Posted February 12, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have the 24 and love it. I wear glasses, and I can more-or-less see the framelines. If I angle my eye to the finder I can even see outside the framelines. Â Sean's reviews pretty much say it all. Can't go wrong with either one. I chose the 24 with the M8 for the framelines. I don't like external viewfinders.

also wear glasses, i got a different preference. as i do not prefer pressing my glasses towards M's viewfinder metal rim, tends to scratch my glasses eventually. i have my 1.25 magnifer always screw on for 35 or longer lens, better focus and rubber rim. i can shoot 21 (FOV 28) with or without external viewfinder IMHO. pascal_meheut Posted February 12, 2007 Share #13  Posted February 12, 2007 I have both the 24mm and the 28mm and I do not find them too close. Matter of taste really. But I have to admit I would have gone for the 21mm should it had framelines...
tom0511 Posted February 12, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted February 12, 2007 I have 21 24 and 28 (and some other lenses ) and on the M8 I like the FOV of the 24 best. I use it without an external finder even though I do have one which works (CV21D-finder). Â I prefer the 24 fov to that of the 28. However the 28 M8-frame is much nicer to see and the 28 is f2. So right now I feel there is a need for both these lenses. Â My 21 has not been used much, I dont know why but the 24 seems wide enough for me, and when I want really wide I use the 15. Â Regarding sharpness I find both , the 21 and the 24 exceptional lenses.
