Grey M9 seem cheap compared to Silver M8?

An iPhone cost a few hundred bux with a glass screen.. so no reason they can't put a glass screen on a camera. Phones are dropped all the time.. some times the glass breaks but it's remarkable how much abuse they take and not break. It doesn't have to be saphire but glass would be quite a step up from plastic.

Have you seen an iphone screen broken. You should google it.....

No, not really, I like grey but bought black. My thinking is that if you can't get $7000 of worthwhile use out of a grey M9 then a chrome M9 isn't going to help much is it?

You could say the same for plastic.. why not just make it out of styrofoam? It's almost like many of you are rooting for a cheaper made camera.

The styrofoam is a limited edition "Esther Williams" floating M. $16000, only through Leica boutiques.

I'm fairly sure the quality of the images wouldn't change if you could get an M9 with a plastic top. It would stop the complaints because it would be as hard wearing as a Nikon. Which also makes me wonder why it seems only Leica's need sapphire glass? I can see why its desirable, anybody would vote for it, but its not a deal breaker, if you cared about the function of the camera and LCD you'd complain about the poor quality of the image before moaning about it getting scratched.

A chrome M9 is going to look great much longer than a grey M9 (or black), but why bother spending so much more, both are going to conk out and become irreparable at the same time. In a few years time you will start to see the first M8 paper weights, and a chrome finish won't save them. An M9 or M9-P in any finish isn't an investment as many people like to think of it, not like an M3 that will continue to give years of service. Its a modern bit of technology that is out of date the very second it leaves the production line.

Why are people talking about image quality?

The OP asked about the finish on the M9, which he finds cheap/poor/not chrome.

Personally, i couldn't care less if they use electroplating/nano-coating/pixie-dust as long it looks good AND lasts long (IF we are talking about cosmetics).

Does it affect my images? No, but i like good looking things. Thats why i don't dress at The Gap.

Not everyone likes wearing ripped jeans and t-shirts with so much crap on it you think you are a billboard.

And yes OP, Leica cheaped out on the M9 finish and is still asking a premium price. Welcome to Leica (but seriously... smexy camera's). :D

I won't spend more...

The M8 sold for much less. So you're paying more for the grey M9.
