Gregor Samsa Posted August 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. I bought myself a leather case for my leica M3 on ebay. It arrived the other day but i can't seem to attach it to my leica. The groves doesent match the screw. What im wondering is, where the problem lies, with my case, or with my leica? Im considering to buy a new bag, since this doesent fit, but i thought id ask here first, in case the new bag wont fit my camera either. The store i bought it from offered to take it back, so its not a big problem, i just would like a half case for my leica:) Cheers http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9586/dsc00435ey.jpg http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/6251/dsc00432n.jpg http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6954/dsc00434w.jpg

Perhaps your Leica has an adapter in its tripodmount so that it fits the smaller screw of a modern case or of a modern tripod. 3/8" to 1/4" (the 3/8"/16 X 1/4"/20 bushings) here is a photo of such a bushing: http://www.tayhua.com/images/converter1.JPG

250swb Posted August 13, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 13, 2011 An M3 with a 3/8" tripod mount that needs bushing down? Even my IIIf of 1954 has a 1/4" socket..... I suspect somebody has cobbled together a case and used a 3/8" screw instead of a 1/4" Steve
Twotone Posted August 13, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2011 If you look at the bottom of the camera you might find that the there is a bush/adaptor inside the tripod socket if so try to remove/add one to fit the case. You can buy the bushes for about £7 Product details Collectcamera
doubice Posted August 13, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 13, 2011 An M3 with a 3/8" tripod mount that needs bushing down? Even my IIIf of 1954 has a 1/4" socket..... I suspect somebody has cobbled together a case and used a 3/8" screw instead of a 1/4" Steve Generally, all Leicas exported to the US and Canada (and maybe the UK too?) had the smaller 1/4" tripod socket, rest of the world enjoyed the larger 3/8". This was mainly because early on, the North American camera manufacturers adopted the smaller thread, while European cameras had the larger one. Sometimes during the 1970's Leica switched to the 1/4'" for all cameras, no matter what their final destination was. These adapters are regularly available on eBay and are very inexpensive; here is an example: 1pcs 1/4" to 3/8" Convert Screw Adapter for Tripod | eBay Best, Jan
luigi bertolotti Posted August 13, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Welcome to the forum !!! Take an adapter as said above, and use your nice case... btw, it is of a model (don't remember the code) that has a "big-large" front and an "elevated" top... if I remember well, it allows to be used also with the "goggled" lenses of 35 /50 mm and with the Leicameter mounted. I think it was the English-speaking world generally.
Gregor Samsa Posted August 16, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted August 16, 2011 Thank you for all the replies! I must really say, this seems like a very friendly forum! After reading your replies I compared the socket of my M3 with the socket of my Canon AE-1. What i found was the the Leica socket was indeed larger, this made me compare the screw to the socket of the AE-1 and its a match! As far as i can tell. When "doubice" said that the leicas that were exported to the US had the 1/4 socket, I came to the conclusion that this most likely would apply to the cases as well, and since I ordered my case from the US i got a case with a 1/4! Thank you for all the help, i'll just get one of the adapters for my camera and start using it!
