Advertisement Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 Hi jamriman, Take a look here Current market value of lenses no longer made for robbery?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2011 You need proper advice, in writing, from your dealer. I'm sure the insurance company will not accept valuations from "strangers" over the Internet.
jaapv Posted August 11, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 11, 2011 That sounds like a nasty experience. Fortunately you are in NY which makes it simple to get a value estimate from a few dealers, so you can pick the highest.
spylaw4 Posted August 11, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 11, 2011 Sorry to hear of your loss. Any reputable dealer should supply you with a written valuation. The problem is that none are available new. The dealer should be able to state last list price, but will that be enough at today's prices? Discuss!
giordano Posted August 11, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2011 I'd start by checking recent eBay transactions and then get a formal estimate from a friendly, reputable dealer. It will need to explain why you need the LHSA lens and not just a normal 50/1.4 asph. Good luck!
jaapv Posted August 11, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2011 Why should one need to explain the reason of ownership to an insurance company? They don't ask why you drive a Bentley instead of a Hyundai.
mikebidwell Posted August 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why should one need to explain the reason of ownership to an insurance company? They don't ask why you drive a Bentley instead of a Hyundai. Your insurer will ask for proof of purchase/ownership when you submit your claim. Therefore if the underwriters accept the claim then they should pay out on a like for like basis. There should be no reason for anyone to have to explain why you need such a lens. Best wishes
earleygallery Posted August 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2011 I think he means to point out to the insurer that it was a special edition (therefore worth more presumably) so he gets another LHSA lens or compensation for it. Read your insurance policy. It may replace new for old (or nearest equivalent), or current market value for said items.
LeicaPassion Posted August 11, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2011 So sorry to hear what happened. You should provide the serial numbers to Leica. Everyone should make sure their equipment is fully insured.
giordano Posted August 11, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 11, 2011 Why should one need to explain the reason of ownership to an insurance company? They don't ask why you drive a Bentley instead of a Hyundai. It's nothing to do with reasons for ownership, it's about substitutability. Even a pen-pusher in an insurance company knows there is a difference between a Bentley and a Hyundai, but the difference between an ordinary black Summilux ASPH and the LHSA version is more subtle and best made clear by the valuer at the outset. glenerrolrd Posted August 11, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2011 Getting a dealer to help you value them is important ..but I would have my own information as well. When I work with my dealer to value used items ..we start with the completed (sales) on ebay . Hopefully you can find enough examples . We throw out the high and low sales and average the others . Thats as close to FMV as you can get ..what similar lenses are actually changing hands at . Other good sources are KEH ,camera west ..both have large used equipment businesses . Your biggest issue will be proof of ownership if you didn t buy them new and explaining the significant increase in values .
