carlosecpf Posted August 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Guys, I've been travelling non stop for the past month and was carrying my M8u with me all the time. I arrived back home this week and when I was reviewing the pictures on the big screen, I noticed a very thin vertical red line on my pictures, even at low ISO. I started researching online to learn more about this, and I was already getting used to the idea of sending it to Solms for repair. However, I was reviewing some pictures I took last night at a friend's birthday party and to my surprise, NONE of the pictures had the Red Line on it.... ZERO, nada ... The only explanation that comes to my mind is that between yesterday's event and my trip, I've upgraded the firmware to 2.014. Could this have fixed the red line problem? Or should I still send the camera to solms for repair? thanks in advance!
Advertisement Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Hi carlosecpf, Take a look here FW upgrade fixed the red line problem?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
zombii Posted August 9, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2011 Don't know if the firmware fixed the problem but why would you send it to Solms when you live in New York and Leica NJ is so close? They fixed my line problem last year and did a good CLA as well.
carlosecpf Posted August 9, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted August 9, 2011 thanks for your reply. I need to update my profile here. I moved to Brazil few months ago. Nobody in the Leica forum faced this situation before?
zombii Posted August 10, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 10, 2011 When I had the problem, it didn't show up in every image. It was more likely to show up in high ISO shots but I'm not sure that's true for everybody who's had it. It's caused by a single hot pixel and the way that pixel affects the processing on the line. If you shoot a blank white sheet of paper out of focus, you should be able to see the pixel that's the problem at 100%. There's a program called Pixel Fixer that will find hot pixels in your images and tell you its location. Google it.
jaapv Posted August 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2011 As a matter of fact I had a red ine in two shots out of many thousands. I put it down to a pixel getting stuck and going again.
Shootist Posted August 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2011 thanks for your reply. I need to update my profile here. I moved to Brazil few months ago. Nobody in the Leica forum faced this situation before? The problem I had with both my M8's was not a red line to say. It was a line that started near the top, or bottom (I don't remember), and went only half way through the image and was only truly visible at higher ISO. I sent both in for repair and had the sensor changed out.
carlosecpf Posted August 10, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted August 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks guys for the replies. I will used the camera for another month or so to see if the problem comes back or not, before sending it to Leica.
Tamagi Posted August 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2011 I had the red line before and after the update. Sent it in and had the sensor changed under warranty.
Erik Gunst Lund Posted August 15, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 15, 2011 My M8u is via Leica Professional Service at Solms for the redline problem; Their view of the general condition of the camera: Strong traces of use Quote for the repair: Exchange CCD and main boards Cover Clean, adjust and control rangefinder Total €500 That is OK IMO but I will make sure to send in the camera via LPS before one year next time... carlosecpf Posted September 3, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted September 3, 2011 just an update: I've been shooting extensively with my M8u and the red line problem has disappeared completely. It seems the firmware really fixed it.
