spydrxx Posted August 6, 2023 Share #122 Posted August 6, 2023 Several years ago I was testing several of my Leica lenses against one another for flare, sharpness, and contrast. Same lighting, subject, pose. This was my collapsible 50 (M mount) Welcome, dear visitor! RonSmith Posted October 11, 2023 Share #124 Posted October 11, 2023 Just got another collapsible - a 1955 LTM No. 1328xxx - that is the cleanest example I've ever seen. Welcome, dear visitor! From 1952, this is uncommon Summicron of first batch. May I ask the first 3 digits ( 9xx or 1xx ) of your collapsible. Mine is one year older (1951 ! ... radioactive glass ) but is pretty good performer on film and digital Welcome, dear visitor! The glass of the radioctive version shines yellow, do you see this on the Photos?
leicaoptik Posted December 6, 2023 Share #128 Posted December 6, 2023 Yepp, finally I found one of these beauties in a near Mint condition and with a fresh CLA-service. It is not radioactive and the pictures with it are fascinating, analog and digital. Next year will be her 70th birthday😳 I love those Leica lenses with low microcontrast. She fits perfect in my range of Nocti 1.2 and Lux 2.Gen. 5cm lenses. Welcome, dear visitor! The crown glass or whatever material makes most samples have lots of marks if not scratches. I find the lens produces one of the nicest images by f2.4 and great for people at f2. I think the contrast they produce is more resembling of how I perceive things, and the bokeh while not the smoothest works well to add spice to the picture. My biggest problem is that, unlike many, my two copies of the Red Scale Elmar work so well and I often find f4 to be where the DOF is what I want, and I end up using the Elmar anytime light isn't scarce.

The lower contrast of this lens is sometimes very disappointing, and sometimes, like your photos here, very painterly. I have a near mint 50 Summicron collapsible from 1955. Youxin Ye gave it a CLA and confirmed that it is in very good working order. I find it to be a very nice combo with my M10 monochrome. Here is a photo of my son, wide open at F2. The bokeh is definitely different. Bottom right is a defect in the image due to a large piece of dirt that I did not see that was on the filter. I need to try to clone it out. 4

My lens is radioactive and was very yellow. That yellow was reflected in my photos. I got rid of the yellow hue in my lens by placing it on top of a mirror and shining a light through the top of the lens, while the light hovered very close. It took a week for it to clear up. After that, I noticed that the images from my lens appeared sharper than my previous images before.!!

I paid more for the lens than most listed (no scratches or cleaning marks) but the focus is too stiff - so it needs service. I am debating whether to send it back or keep it and just pay for the CLA... Thanks!

mdarnton Posted July 8, 2024 Share #139 Posted July 8, 2024 My favorite lens of all time. I've had four of them over the years, but I think that my current one, picked up around 2016, is the cleanest. Here's a shot from my second one, taken in 1975, that shows what I like most about it--creaminess combined with reasonable sharpness at f/2: Blythe by Michael Darnton, on Flickr
