salim Posted July 30, 2011 Share #1  Posted July 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have currently the 35mm Summicron. I love it and it does most of the work  What so special about the 50mm summilux apart from the extra stop and the 15m extra zoom from the 35mm cron?   I am worried that when I buy the 50lux, I will toss the 35cron and that I dont want.I had a fair amount of bad decision in buying lens, this time I want to make sure that Indeed I will make use of them.  Anyone please? Advertisement Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Hi salim, Take a look here Shall I get the 50mm 1.4 Summilux?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jlindstrom Posted July 30, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Well, they are 2 different focals. I don't think just the rendering of 50 lux will cause you to dump the 35 cron. It's a whole different story if you end up liking the 50 focal more than 35. But then it doesn't matter which 50 you choose.. Â Also there are plenty of ppl around who like to have both 35 and 50 around, even though many say they're redundant. It's purely a personal choice. Â As far the 50 lux lens itself, I can't comment on the current ASPH version of it. But I do have the last pre-asph version and I love it to bits. It's currently my absolute favorite lens. It's small and light enough, rendering is pure magic.. Going by that, it's been said that the current 50 lux builds/adds to that by being even better. It's hard to imagine such lens would exist, but "so they say". Â So, if you want to get the 50 lux then do so. It won't disappoint you for sure (technical qualities)! But if you end up not liking the focal, it'll be easy lens to sell at no to very little loss or possibly even with slight profit since they are really hard to get. Â Good luck with your choice! asmith Posted July 30, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted July 30, 2011 If you can find one and can afford it, buy it. It's a superb lens. If you find you don't like it you can probably sell it at a profit. They are scarce and in great demand. I mainly use the 35 and 50 Summiluxes and find them a great combination. Alwyn
salim Posted July 30, 2011 Author Share #4  Posted July 30, 2011 asmith  how do you find them great combination. That is my question. I know I would love the LUX, what I am worried, I wont have use of the CRON which I dont want, having a cron sitting at home doing nothing?
lct Posted July 30, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted July 30, 2011 35 and 50 are two different focal lengths. Some people prefer 35, others 50 or both, depends on personal tastes. I would try a cheap 50 before spending big bucks if i were you.

I would try a cheap 50 before spending big bucks if i were you. Â Â As a new Leica user I am also building a set of lenses (I have 4 now which is all I need). I have the 35 Cron and a 50 Cron which just arrived yesterday which I am looking forward to using. perhaps down the track if I love the 50 heaps I will go for the Lux. The people around here certainly hold it in very high regard. I might add that my favourite FL is the 75 Cron and I have great expectations of the 24 2.8 coming next week. lct Posted July 30, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted July 30, 2011 I suspected that the 75/2 would suit you. Great lens isn't it. Great combo with the 35/2 asph as well.
bbbonthemoon Posted July 30, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted July 30, 2011 I own both lenses, 35 asph cron and 50 asph lux. My only lenses, actually, for digital. Â I can say 35 cron files look somehow ordinary comparing to these from 50 lux. This is real a "must have" lens for Leica IMHO. I use both, lux most of the time, and I put 35 cron only when I need wider angle. 35 cron is great workhorse, but the 50 lux is a little essence of what the Leica's are about. At least for me Get one if you can find it.

Holybasil Posted July 30, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted July 30, 2011 A general rule of thumb for me is "If you have to ask, then you don't need it". This little rule has probably saved me around 4000 euros lol.

I use them for 85% of my shooting. The 35 is a wonderful lens. The 50 lux is simply spectacular. The new issue of LFI has an article that compares various 50 lenses. It's worth reading before buying. Xmas Posted July 30, 2011 Share #16  Posted July 30, 2011 Hi  The 5cm lens is more difficult to handle, e.g. less depth of field,..., more prone to camera shake, etc.  If you have a f/2 35mm you may need a f/2 or even slower 5cm.  But the CV f/1.5 or /2.5, the ZM f/1.5 or f/2 the Leica pre asph f/1.4, f/2, /2.5 or /2.8 etc., are other options  The Leica name plate won't help you take better photos.  Noel

Jeff S Posted July 30, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Hard to take photos with a lever though. Â No need to take them with a lens he doesn't already own if the frame lines (FOV) don't suit his style and preference. The OP is trying to decide whether to make a purchase. I merely suggested a first step to evaluate; meanwhile I think his other lens can still take pics, and his feet likely move. Â Jeff
sblitz Posted July 30, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted July 30, 2011 can't really opine on what works best for you or not but i must echo bbbonthemoon's comments -- i feel the same exactly. and if i could only keep one lens it would be the 50 lux, it is truly a special lens. once you use it you will see what i and others are talking about. Â as for the difference in the fov, i find that it is distinct enough to warrant a difference. Â steve
