EPI Posted July 27, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do Leica DNG files contain embedded JPEG preview images? Currently it seems like my DNG files do not contain embedded JPEG preview images and this becomes a problem when view the Leica DNG files in Expression Media 2 or now Media Pro. Is there an in camera setting for the Leica M9 to include embedded JPEG preview images? -EPI
Advertisement Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Hi EPI, Take a look here Embedded JPEG images in DNG Raw files. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted July 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 28, 2011 There is an embedded Jpeg, but it is very low resolution. There is not a camera setting to change this to a higher resolution image. Regarding Expression Media, it's a long time since I used the program - I moved to Lightroom years ago - but I think there's a setting to create an Expression Media preview from the DNG file as part of the import process. Alternatively you could use the Adobe DNG convertor to concert the M8/M9 DNGs to DNGs and create a larger embedded Jpeg.
jaapv Posted July 28, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 28, 2011 I don't know your computer program, but what about setting the camera to DNG+JPG?
perb Posted July 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2011 If you have both Media Pro and C1 Pro, then this video tutorial should be of great help: Regards Per
macpants Posted August 9, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2011 It is quite unusual for a digital image file to NOT contain a jpeg. I don't doubt what you say as I have limited experience of DNG's. I have just written a paper which, in part, involves itself with the subject of embedded jpegs. In fact all the RAW files I have encountered (.NEF, .CR2, .RW2 etc) do have more than one embedded jpeg. Some of the embedded jpegs also have further jpegs embedded within them too ! I am not sure how familiar you are with Linux but you could try to analyse the IFD tags in the metadata to find the exact byte offsets for the embedded jpegs. You could use ExifTool by Phil Harvey to locate the actual embedded jpegs. Failing that, Graphic Converter on a Mac (Im not sure if there is a Windows version) utilises ExifTool. This tool will enable you to see the metadata beyond that which is shown by the average Exif output from a RAW editor like Aperture or Lightroom. Use ExifTool to determine the existence of the embedded jpegs. Im sorry I have no experience of Expression Media.
