Ring for Nex 5

Hello

I am considering buying a Nex 5 with a Leica M 35 mm , is that the combination OK ?

and which ring ?

... waiting for a M10 or a Nex-Fuji-like Leica

thank you

Me too toyed with the idea from the time of Nex intro... I liked its size and handling, though hated the idea of framing/focusing "looking at LCD P&S way" :o; I read anything I found, here and on the Net, on the topic, even made a quick test into a shop (Cron 35 asph / kit zoom at 35) : at the end, I abandoned the idea... NEX can be enjoiable and good as IQ with its own lenses, Leica lenses are the splendid tools we know well... imho, the combination of the two makes you LOSE the best of both worlds, simply.

yes but having tried a M9 it is not the right camera for me, Leica will release a new body (like Nex or Fuji ) for Photokina 2012

I found the opposite. I managed to pick up a Nex 5 body only on eBay and bought an adapter (which cost almost as much as the body!) with the intention of using it with my Leica glass for video. I am about to go through the North West Passage and thought that some video would be good, but I could also use the body as a back up for the M9.

To my great surprise I find the combination very useable with the new firmware. I hate the idea of using any camera with live view but you can now focus with ease and although I will need Cornerfix with wide angle the IQ is excellent.

I miss the absence of a rangefinder but it is wonderful to regress to the days of focussing by scale!

... and this could be the GOOD answer... ;) provided that they put the right attention to sensor, this can result in a fine companion for M lenses too; surely, I won't look at other possible equipment before this body (already much rumored, and clearly quoted by Stefan Daniel of Leica) will arrive.

Dont skimp on the E Mount to M mount lens adapter. Those ones on ebay that sell for 25 dollars are actually worth less than 25 dollars. If you buy a cheap one, you'll end up replacing it immediately. I went with the Fotodiox Pro for 80 plus shipping, which is in the middle cost wise, and for the most part I have not been disappointed. I have a dedicated Leica M39 to NEX adapter for use with the Summitar, as my thread mount to M adapted version didnt sit completely snug to the NEX adapter. The 25, 35 and 90mm lenses that I use all have a perfect fit.

As I dont like to manual focus (or compose) at arms length, I use my NEX-5 like this. For using the 50 and 90 it's essential for critical (or even remotely close) focus. For the 35 and 25 Zeiss, I find the screen is almost easier to deal with than the hoodman.

I like the M lens/NEX combination quite a bit. It's a tenth of the cost ($600 vs $6000) of an M9, has better high ISO performance, and although I dont use or need it, it shoots HD video, which some people seem to want. I still want an M9, but this little Sony has it's benefits.

NEX 7 will soon be announced.

Rumoured specs:

1) The NEX-7 has a metal body

2) A new super fast contrast autofocus

3) Built-in 3 million dot OLED viewfinder

4) 24 Megapixel

5) ISO 100-25.600

6) 24p HD-video

7) Pop-up flash

I looked at that picture of the Nex 7 and am suspicious of its accuracy. Am I the only one who sees that the OFF ON switch says OFF NO? This is not to say that a NEX 7 won't be coming soon. And those dual "knobs or dials" seem kind of oddly smooth for something you'd turn with your thumb. (Even for a mock-up or illustration.).

Alan, good catch. The no/on button is indeed strange. Many, many pages have been written about this picture on Sony fora and believe it or not, this is considered a genuine Sony design study. Most people interested in the NEX think the camera will look close to what you see here.

As much as I wanted to hate Sony NEX cameras more I look into it NEX makes sense, very capable sensor in a small body.

If rumoured NEX-7 comes with EVF I may be able to swallow bitter pill of APS-C sensor and enjoy M, R and Nikon AiS, AFD & G lenses (forgot to mention Sony/Zeiss offering) with one common digital back.

The way Leica go about their forthcoming mirrorless camera with possibly APS-C size sensor they better make first batch in titanium and clad it in croc leather in order to make any sales.

I don't doubt that this design makes sense and looks good. I just have a hard time understanding them missing that detail. Since this is the Leica forum and we know what Stefan Daniel said about a future Leica, system, I think this Nex 7 is the road map that Leica and others will probably follow.

Sony seems to be pushing the envelope of technology and size more than other companies probably due to their capability to design and manufacture so many of the most advanced electronic, mechanical, and optical components in house. E.g. making a 24 megapixel APS sensor and an APS format shutter that is compact yet can cycle so fast is quite an achievement. If this "rumored" 3 megapixel OLED viewfinder turns out to be really good, it should make using an EVF much more acceptable to pros and others and this technology will be adopted by more cameras in the near future.

I would imagine Sony advertising & camera R&D budget exceeds Leica overall turnover, only area where Leica outshines competition is lens design.

So the next question why bother with Leica version, it will probably lag Sony in terms of launch date and probably product continuity.

Should you buy NEX3/5 and adaptor ( I bought few cheap ones, all work well with some adjustments to make them fit tighter) add the LCD HOOD, foldable one, The JJC LCH-NEX3/5 ($10)works well and same time protects the lcd glass.Add a pair of covers for the adapter and camera body.

You can make pinhole camera with one too.

Yes it will be up to Leica to differentiate its APS mirrorless system. And Sony is certainly blazing some trails here. As for technology, the hope would be that by being"nimble" they would be able to pick and choose up to date electronic and other components from various vendors. Thus they will be able to make competitive and perhaps unique cameras as these mirrorless designs becomes kind of main stream before long and there will only be gradual "improvements."

I don't think of Leica as a particularly nimble company, but maybe they can work this out.

Never looked into NEX keenly until few hours ago, rumour has it that new NEX-7 is just round the corner and it is likely to be fitted with improved OLED EVF exceeding in resolution EVF fitted to recent Sony DSLRs, A33 & A55 - see link.

New Sony Alpha 55 and Alpha 33 EVF DSLRs to feature fixed Translucent Mirror news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums

Considering that NEX-5 with kit lens cost about £400 today (M9 is £5000), even if NEX-7 sells for a grand Leica will have some serious catching up to do.

Leica you better do!

If NEX-7 works as rumoured and if Sony plucks its courage (in reality see market potential) to venture into mirrorless full frame they would be outselling Leica by colossal margin.
