Keith (M) Posted July 23, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I received a newsletter from Silverfast yesterday announcing Silverfast 8. SilverFast, the most popular scanner software in the world, is released as brand-new version SilverFast 8. After many successful years, SilverFast will be available completely renewed towards the end of August for the most important scanners of all major manufacturers. With the powerful new SilverFast software images can be created, edited and brought to perfection easily. The patent-pending WorkflowPilot featuring a world‘s first is just one of many new developments that bring significant advantages for the user. sjefjans Posted July 23, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2011 Is Silverfast roughly 10 times better then Vuescan? Considering the price tag?
plasticman Posted July 23, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2011 Is Silverfast roughly 10 times better then Vuescan? Considering the price tag? My problem with Silverfast is that I've never managed to get results that are as good as Vuescan, coupled with their policy of selling separate software for each scanner, rather than the generic compatibility built into the cheaper package. If the update actually delivers better quality I'll switch in the blink of an eye - but from my reading of the press release, the biggest innovation seems to be one of those software 'wizards' so beloved of Windows developers, that no-one with any know-how actually uses. Without my cynical hat on, I'm glad to see scanning development is still progressing, in whatever form.
Stealth3kpl Posted July 23, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 23, 2011 I hope the interface has only 2 buttons. One is "Scan all frames with perfect colour correction" and the other is "Desired File Size". Finger's crossed. Pete

Keith (M) Posted July 24, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted July 24, 2011 I talked to Silverfast about 6.6 not working with Lion and they said they hope to be able to have it ready in a week. As for SilverFast 8, I have no idea what the upgrade price from 6.6 would be but I am interested.. If you have bought v6.6 since June 1st, the upgrade is free. The newsletter states:- Users who want to work with SilverFast right now can take current version 6.6 without experiencing any disadvantages. Until the end of the 2011, LaserSoft Imaging will offer a free upgrade to SilverFast 8 to all customers who will purchase or have purchased a copy of SilverFast version 6.6 after June 1st. This offer is naturally also valid for SilverFast versions bundled with a scanner device or purchased from a dealer.
el.nino Posted July 24, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) And otherwise it will be about 200€ for the upgrade. So, if you are already on Lion you will be forced to buy the upgrade.

This is not correct, they are coming out with version 8 because regardless of Lion, that was thier intent. 6.6 will be updated to run with Lion if one chooses to not go the route of SilverFast 8... I would hope so. But as far as I understood they have to rewrite the whole software to work on lion. That's why they make a new version. Didn't you also write in the Silverfast forum? I too am starting to wonder about this, there is quite a fiaco brewing over there in terms of them potentially misleading us in terms of 6.6 / Lion compatibility... They are in for a PR nightmare if they don't get this figured out soon, I would have never upgraded to Lion if I had known this was going to be an issue... photohc Posted July 27, 2011 Share #14 Posted July 27, 2011 If I was a betting man, their version 8 is the answer to Lion. Otherwise, why are they silent on the current users. It will be a big problem for them and us.
Steve Ash Posted July 27, 2011 Share #15 Posted July 27, 2011 I would prefer to have the option of a one button scan with two settings only a) the type of film which has been inserted desired resolution I would prefer to have no color correction at all but to get the colors as they are on the film. Like when I make a color calibration and insert a slide film. This shall be pressed in a raw file which I can work on if desired. Steve I hope the interface has only 2 buttons. One is "Scan all frames with perfect colour correction" and the other is "Desired File Size".Finger's crossed. Pete

Silverfast are not going to rewrite older versions of the software for Lion. In fact, I don't know of any company that is doing that. Lion compatibility for software that has legacy PowerPC code will come via entirely new versions. Personally, I have no plans to buy new Mac hardware this year (both my Macs are late-2010 machines) so will stick with Snow Leopard (which has been rock solid for me) for the foreseeable future. At the moment I can't find anything compelling enough about Lion to go through the hassles and expense of upgrading other software (for example, Flash CS4 which doesn't apparently work at all in Lion). delander † Posted July 27, 2011 Share #17 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) I think Silverfast have (or had) no intention of getting ver6.6 to work on Lion, even though they appear to have made statements that ver 6.6 would work. The problem would appear to be that you wont get a free upgrade to ver.8 unless you purchased your ver6.6 after June 2011. I bought mine on 26 April, so I would have to pay for an upgrade. That woudn't be too bad except that the upgrade price is rumoured to be €200! The other problem for me is that I have Plustek 7600i which uses the Silverfast drivers. So I cannot change to Vuescan, because it relies on the Silverfast drivers, which presumably dont work under Lion. Now people will say well Silverfast have no responsibilty to make ver.6.6 compatible with Lion because it is a legacy product. But it was not a Legacy product when I bought it in April and by then Silverfast knew it would not work on Lion. My advice dont buy a scanner which relies totally on Silverfast! So I cant upgrade to Lion, and dont need to, but one day I will be forced to. Jeff Edited July 27, 2011 by delander †

Lion compatibility for software that has legacy PowerPC code will come via entirely new versions. What they could do, having produced ver.8 is offer a cut down version, omitting all the new features and call it ver6.6 for Lion. What version you get would depend on your product key. What version you get would depend on your product key. They could do that but I'm sure they won't. LaserSoft will not want to remove a useful incentive for existing users to pay to upgrade to 8.
