Image Quality: D-lux-5 versus V-lux-2

I have been studying images and comments in several forums regarding these two Leica cameras. D-lux-5 versus V-lux-2.

I am interested in the best image quality between these two specific models. The M system is not an option (unless I sell my car and ride my bike 50 miles a day to and from work). To get an S system, I would need to sell my house....hubbie wouldn't approve!!

Although I like small size cameras, I will choose image quality over larger choice of options in functionality if it comes down to that. I am not big on doing lots of post-processing, preferring out of camera results.

I am an amateur enthusiast who is familiar with DSLR's.

I take pics of all sorts of subjects. I would love to have the option of taking pics in low light without flash.

From what I can see, both of these models produce great images. But, I really want some feed back, now that both versions have been in use since last autumn, as I recall.

Again, image quality is critical.

all feedback is appreciated!!

thanks!

Can't help with the V-Lux but the D-Lux 5 is very impressive. Great colors, lens is sharp, fast, and versatile, AF speed is fast, good dynamic range (sensor makers have made major advances in recent years), very good image quality up to ISO 400, higher is useable for gritty looking street scenes.

Folks are going to mention the X1. It has excellent image quality even at high ISO but you have to put up with a single focal length lens and much slower AF. But ultimate IQ might be what you need so worth considering. It's a lot pricier.

Leica is reported to be bringing out a new interchangeable lens compact next year, which should be interesting, but it's some way off.

I think you'd be happy with the D-Lux. Check out user reviews here: Leica D-LUX 5 Digital Camera (Black) 18151 B&H Photo Video

I'm using a V-Lux 2. If you want your photo as they get out of the camera in jpeg, maybe the D-Lux would be better. If you make raw, the photos will look what you want them to look like because you'll process them by yourself.

You can take a look at my photos (links in my signature). All have been taken in the raw format and processed using Camera raw, the Photoshop plugin.

From all I've read, it seems clear that the D-Lux will have higher image quality. However, depending on what you want to shoot, the V-Lux might be a better choice - It's zoom range is good enough for wildlife photogrsaphy. Tell us more about how you plan to use the camera.

I have a V-Lux 2 and a Panasonic LX5 and I can tell you that it's no contest, the LX5 will take better pictures in a much wider variety of circumstances. I find the V-Lux photos have too much noise in them at any lighting beside broad day light.

The good shots I've gotten with the V-lux 2 required a ton of post development work on the computer. However I have had some luck using it as video camera, which is not why I bought it.

I think the D-Lux 5 should be your choice.

+1

If you're looking for versatility with outstanding quality the the D-Lux 5 is perfect.

If you want to give up some of the above versatility for a larger sensor and an outstanding (35mm equivalent lens), and don't mind spending twice as much then the X1 is for you.

Or just say "what the heck..." and get an M9 and a bunch of lenses.

OK!

We have a winner!

I think!?!?!??

D-lux-5 sounds like the way to go. I will need to get the little hot-shoe viewfinder, but if the IQ is there, that's clearly the one for me...

many thanks!

(I was kinda hoping it would be the D-lux-5 since it seemed to literally call out to me!!)

Many many thanks for the helpful responses!

Wish me luck!

kindly,
