chris_tribble Posted July 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that we know the 9 MP is available in chrome, I'm surprised that no one seems to have asked about the possibility of a black chrome M9... This would be the one thing that would tempt me to "upgrade" my M9 body. I don't like the paint finish - and never have done. I loved the finish of my M6s and 7s - if Leica offered a black chrome version of the M9 as an a la carte option I'd hand over the money immediately. Anyone any idea if this could ever be a possibility?
Advertisement Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Hi chris_tribble, Take a look here Black Chrome M9 MP?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
StephenPatterson Posted July 21, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2011 Well, obviously it's possible to have black chrome, as Leica have produced many cameras in that finish. I've never owned a black chrome M5, M6, M7 or M8 but there are people who think the black chrome does not wear well on brass. "Looks dirty" according to some. I don't know if that's the reason Leica chose to paint the black M8.2, M9 and MP, but apparently they are not changing their black finish on the M9-P. Hakku Posted July 21, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2011 . . . I don't like the paint finish - and never have done. Will not buy a painted camera for 6K Euro, rather wait until Leica make up their minds and go back to black chrome. But not at a mark-up for a la carte, it's already in the calculation since the silver (chrome) and black (paint) versions of the M9 P have the same price tag. Do we have to wait for M10, then both versions in chrome finish again (hopefully)? H.
Nick_S Posted July 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 22, 2011 I agree. If I buy such a camera it will be as a user and I much prefer the way black chrome wears over time. Well used M8s still look fine to me. Nick
Washington Posted July 23, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 23, 2011 Gee, I wonder if Leica would do black-chrome on a custom basis? I hate to think what that would cost. I rather doubt they are doing their plating ''in house’’ now and having a job done in black doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.

chris_tribble Posted July 23, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted July 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'd also heard something along these lines - so straight chrome is OK? What a pity...
pico Posted July 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted July 23, 2011 A German representative of Leica told be that they will not produce a black chrome M9 due to environmental protection laws. Frank Would you settle for black paint? IMHO it is better looking. The black coating on my M7s is not particularly durable, either. Is it paint or plating? BTW - hasn't Leica also changed some of their glass for environmental regulations? I know that Zeiss changed the formula for the 38mm Biogon ten years ago for such reasons. Nick_S Posted July 23, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 23, 2011 If environmental considerations are being cited, then how come black chrome is available as a finish for the M7, and also for the MP as an a la carte option.

jaapv Posted July 23, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2011 A German representative of Leica told be that they will not produce a black chrome M9 due to environmental protection laws. Frank Sounds a bit like a spurious reason to me. More likely it is a bit more expensive than bright chrome.
Hakku Posted July 23, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2011 Sounds a bit like a spurious reason to me. More likely it is a bit more expensive than bright chrome. It's my impression, too. So why is chrome available now in silver but not in black? Could only be understood if there is a major difference in chemical formula between both versions. Cost should not be the reason, since black (painted) is already offered at chrome (silver) price. So, why really can't we have a black chrome M9P?? H.
