epand56 Posted July 19, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sometime think that some of the German members in this forum are quite weird. Anybody in this World, being him English, American, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese or else, that has to put an ad in any international Buy & Sell Forum section write it in English, a language supposed to be spoken and understood by almost the entire World. But they don't, they just write it in German. This prevent, I suppose, at least half of the members of this Forum, me included (I only speak Italian, English and French), from understanding what they are talking about. I think this is unfair and unpleasant. End of the complaint.

azzo Posted July 19, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2011 I hear you Enrico. .. Sometimes, I find myself using Google to translate what is being said. ... .. I end up even more confused .... seriously. ...
epand56 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted July 19, 2011 Ivan, on line translators are still far from being affordable tools... I see why some is called Babel Fish
Lightwrangler Posted July 19, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2011 Maybe they just don't want to sell international. One has to respect that. And, btw, if you come from the german forum, the link to the B&S section is marked with the german word "Anzeigenmarkt" only. So this may mislead some of german heritage to think it is a german B&S section only (although of course everything in that section is written in english) Mike
Dutch Posted July 19, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 19, 2011 When I visit Germany, I speak German. When Germans visit me, I speak German. Seriously though, I don't think it is all that weird. Doesn't this forum have a strong German heritage? Plus, German is a world language and is spoken by many people outside of Germany.
berndr Posted July 19, 2011 Share #6 Posted July 19, 2011 Hello, sometimes it may be just a national offering. The forum is splitted in the three parts international (english), german and russian. In my opinion it's not ok to say everybody has to learn english because this is the "world language". I think it is legal to write a german announcement in the buy and sell section, when the person can't write in english. Especially when you want to be sure not to be misunderstood. Kind regards, Bernd.
prunelle Posted July 19, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... But they don't, they just write it in German. ... When I sell something on eBay, I write my ad in French. Seems normal to me. I write in English only where I must do so.

epand56 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted July 19, 2011 sometimes it may be just a national offering. I can take that, you just have to state it in your ad. Making it understandable to anybody is just a matter of politeness. I would never write an ad in Italian on this Forum, first because I don't understand why people of, say, Norway, shouldn't be interested in what I have to sell and second because is a courtesy towards the other members of this Forum. But again, mine is not really a complaint, is more something I do not understand (literally )

Jeff S Posted July 19, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 19, 2011 Funny you mention this, Enrico. Yesterday I was browsing unfamiliar (to me) parts of the forum and must have inadvertently clicked on something that turned the entire forum into German. I then had to navigate all the German headings to find the one that would get me back to English. Felt like I was lost in a small German town for a bit. Fokus Posted July 19, 2011 Share #18 Posted July 19, 2011 Enrico, some men marry women when they don't speak the same language. :D @ Karina, I love your statement, You are sooo right! ;-)) @Enrico: I personally always try to be understood by everybody I address to, and I am German. When I was invited in a very very kind italian family long ago we decided to talk French because that was the easiest way to understand each other. So there is always a way of talking. I do not think that those people who write German in this forum do that because they do not want to be polite, really. I think it is just because they are not able to express what they want to say in English. For me, this is sad and I think I would feel the same way as You, Enrico. But in my opinion it is still better than no comment by these people at all, because the forum lives by the communication between its members, in any way. They can read in the answers if they are understood or not. Greetings Ralf

epand56 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Share #20 Posted July 19, 2011 I do not think that those people who write German in this forum do that because they do not want to be polite I'm absolutely sure of that, Ralf, mine was probably a complaint coming from my frustration of not understanding German. I would simply like to have the chance to read anything is written here because I think it might be of some interest to me, even the description of a lens being sold
