Anyone use a Luigi case for their Leica?

My case for my M2 just screws into the tripod mount - I fail to see the need for anything else, to be honest.

Andy, that's how the Kameraleder cases work. The Luigi cases are designed differently, much like the current Leica cases, where you have to open two small straps round the lugs to undo the case.

Cheers,

Andy

I've got one on my M6. Love it. Stocking dealer is in NYC.

Yeh, I like the look of this one so have just ordered it in black. Nice touch having the higher back under the winder lever.

OK so this question was back some months ago but I just never got around to ordering anything!

I have to confess I've never seen the point of these half cases. The one part of the camera they don't protect is the most sensitive - i.e. the upper part containing the rangefinder - and they just seem to make changing film more difficult.

I posted this on another thread, but I'll repeat it here. This is what I discovered when I put the half-case on my M8 and addresses some utility concerns. I was pleasantly surprised of utility because (yes) I took the plunge more for looks than protection, initially:

"The case, even without grip, does give a bit of bulk. Some things I'd like to contribute that haven't been mentioned: (1) The case surface and that little extra width moves fingers back from the rangerfinder window (no "pinkout" failures in the viewfinder any longer). (2) The camera is cushioned so when it's set down it doesn't "clunk." (3) The camera is now "sticky" because of the leather surface, making it *much* easier to grip in the hand. (4) Smells good. :) (5) No more nose grease on my screen and no more direct worries about scratching the screen. (And, of course, the case would come off of the camera for prolonged storage, should that happen.)"

The PITA is removing the case for battery changes and when the card fills up at 140+ shots but that's hardly a PITA on the order of changing film every 24 shots in my M6 TTL! I thought about a Luigi case for that camera and decided against it--too much "on and off" for my liking.

The quality of the Luigi case is great, in my opinion. It isn't "perfect" in terms of symmetry, etc, but it is really close and has a "professionally handmade" feel to it that I like.

I'm looking for a case to protect my M6 during use. What does everyone think of the Luigi cases?

Or is there anything better that I should consider?

Does Luigi have a web site? Ian's link above does just give me a 'not found' message.

The site is a navigational odyssey:)

But a worthwhile exercise on how _not_ to design a web site <grin>

Apart from the horrendous design the link to the page explaining how to pay appears to point to a page on his C drive.

I have designed a few web pages myself, and this one very nearly gave me a fit ... it would actually be dangerous to a real epileptic.

LOL. Luigi's site is charming and homespun in an enthusiastic, authentic, personal, and energetic way! (All it needed was some MIDI music to start playing on entry to complete the full effect.) My first reaction upon seeing it was: "What the?! Holy . . . . ." But he has *so* many photographs of his work available it's hard NOT to find something you might want (case-wise, if you're looking for cases) while wandering around in there. I've spoken with Luigi (called him about my case) and he's straightforward. Good luck!

I agree - he makes wonderful cases and is a pleasure to do business with. His cases make you want to buy another Leica just so you can choose another leather case colour. But I resist!!

I like the grip on the Luigi case and the flat bottom so you can sit it on a table. Aside from the aesthetics which are very nice it makes the camera much easier to handle and grip at the cost of some added hassle when changing cards and batteries.

It also makes the camera look like a relic from the 50's to casual observers. I find people cut you more slack with Rollei TLR's, old folders and other antique looking cameras they seem to be much less threatening and usually elicit a smile rather then a suspicious glare.

hello Everybody

Just found this great Forum and as a fault of it have bought one of Luigi's masterpieces. He even put a post it note written in his hand in the case saying thankyou Luigi etc...

Like many others I chose a cognac brown case to go with my silver M8 and yes it does look like an old Kodak my Father used to use when I was knee high to a grasshopper!

Hope this helps others to go for this colour combo.

Talk soon.....

Luigi's cases are very fine examples of craftwork, stylish as well as practical. I was sceptical if the menue cover would work properly when i ordered it, but it is perfect and no nuisance in practice when you fix and unfix it.

At the same time i thought the built-in tripod screw a good idea for you don't have to put the camera out of the case using a tripod. Unfortunately this doesn't work. When you want to screw out the tripod you unscrew the camera from the case, so you have to pull out the camera and work with a gripper to seperate the tripod from the case.

Well, may be an issue for a Luigi's update scheme...
