jaimielan Posted July 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I'm totally new to rf shooting but I'm looking at an upgraded M8. It has the upgraded shutter mechanism and the bright line finder upgrade too. My questions are: 1. Is the upgrade worth the $600 difference between it and the regular M8? and 2. Does the upgraded version still need the IR filters? Thanks for the help. Jaimie
Advertisement Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi jaimielan, Take a look here Upgraded M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Erik Gunst Lund Posted July 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 11, 2011 1. When you get it, you get extended warranty from Leica. 2. The upgrade has nothing to do with IR sensitivity...
Gerard Posted July 11, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2011 Hey... 1) That depends on how much you want/need the upgrades 2) Yes There are quite a few M8's out there. Take your time; get the one that is right for you (condition/spec/value).
wilfredo Posted July 11, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2011 I never got any of the upgrades and remain a happy camper with my M8. It's your choice. Which ever way you go it's got to work for you.
Doc Henry Posted July 11, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi Jaimie Welcome to the forum ! I agree with Wilfredo Extra money for the upgrade ,i put in the purchase of Leica lens I also take good pictures with a non up-graded M8 if you're afraid of scratching the screen, put a protective film and you don't need sapphire glass ! and you also lose one fast speed if it's up-graded ! gfspencer Posted July 11, 2011 Share #6 Posted July 11, 2011 The upgrade has nothing to do with IR sensitivity... I know. All my lenses are coded and I have the filters so IR is not a huge problem. I'm mainly going for the brighter frame lines and the quieter shutter. The better glass will be nice. An extra year for the warranty is just gravy. gfspencer Posted July 12, 2011 Share #8 Posted July 12, 2011 The frame lines are not brighter, AFAIK...did I miss something along the way? You are correct. The frame lines are not brighter. I read "bright frame lines" in the Leica upgrade literature and took it to mean that the frame lines are brighter. They are not brighter. They are more accurate for longer distances. Leica says - "And a redesign of the bright line frames in the viewfinder to allow more precise determination of the picture frame for longer distances." gfspencer Posted July 13, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 13, 2011 I just got a quote from Leica USA. The bright frame lines are not mentioned in the quote. Instead they call it an upgrade to the "Rangefinder Mask". Total price for all three upgrades is $2,100. I might just do the rangefinder mask and shutter upgrade for $1,600. Erik Gunst Lund Posted July 13, 2011 Share #10 Posted July 13, 2011 The bright frame lines are not mentioned in the quote. Instead they call it an upgrade to the "Rangefinder Mask". It's the same thing... The bright frame lines that you can see when looking through the rangefinder window is made from ambient light shining through a set of rangefinder Masks... The change of mask changes the apparent size and therefore "corrected distance" for the framelines.
framestore Posted July 15, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 15, 2011 The mask of the M8 is calibrated to 2m; the mask of the M8.2 (Upgrade) is calibrated to 1m. That means that you have less loss in the image field and you are very close to getting the image on the photo that you see in the viewfinder. With the M 8 mask it is, depending on the distance about 1/3 more.
Jeff S Posted July 15, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 15, 2011 The mask of the M8 is calibrated to 2m; the mask of the M8.2 (Upgrade) is calibrated to 1m. You have it backwards. Jeff
Jeff S Posted July 15, 2011 Share #14 Posted July 15, 2011 ...and actually the M8 lines are set for .7 meter; the M9 returned to 1m lines. The M8.2 is the best IMO at 2 m. Jeff
