dchalfon Posted July 9, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I found a summaron 35/2.8 in good conditions. Can i remove its goggles and normally used it with my m8? Any other good options for a lower priced 35mm lens?
Advertisement Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Hi dchalfon, Take a look here Summaron 35/2.8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ramosa Posted July 9, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2011 Can't believe I'm citing Ken Rockwell, but: Worse, if you try to remove Oskar's goggles, the lens' rangefinder coupling is calibrated to see an 0.7x reduction through the rangefinder, so if you remove the goggles, you will now need to recalculate a different distance to set on the focus ring for each distance indicated on the focus ring when focused without the goggles. Leave them on and you won't have to worry about any of this.

If you like the lens, you may find it without goggles in either screw or M mount. Alternatively, the Summarit 35/2.5 is a lower-price (by Leica standards) modern lens. If it doesn't need to be Leica, CV lenses are a more affordable alternative.
lct Posted July 10, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2011 Yes and the lens brings up 50mm instead of 35mm frame lines in the VF so removing its goggles is a no no. Very good lens on the M8 though. Less contrasty than current glass but it is a sharp lens with smooth bokeh.
andybarton Posted July 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 10, 2011 I still reckon that a goggle-less, good condition, Summaron-M f2.8, is the best bargain Leica ever made. I have had, and sold, two of them. Wish I'd kept one...

ramosa Posted July 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I, too, am intrigued by the version of this lens without goggles (for use on an M8). It has a classic rendering and decent price tag. But I am not sure how I would handle coding. I have never self-coded, though I know there are quite a few related threads. Is that a reasonable approach?
Xmas Posted July 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2011 You could get an LTM f2.8 and have a milled & code a baynet mount, probably more appreciation on the LTM cause of the lower volume. Or ignore coding. Noel
ramosa Posted July 14, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 14, 2011 Noel, Good idea. That way, you wouldn't need to send the lens in. Thanks.
