What type 35 Summicrom Lens did I just buy

Hi,

I just got into the world of Leica a few days ago. I purchased an M9 at my local camera shop. I was told by the seller which I have know for many years to start with a 35mm Lens and he had a used 35 Summicron f2 which was perfect. He told me that the lens was know as "bokeh king"? He told me that it was a type 4 pre ASPH lens.

The lens sn: 3457267 and says LEITZ instead of Leica on it. It has a red dot and yellow focal

length indicator.

I did some research and all the lenes I could find had Leica on it. I paid around $2100. I don't

know if I got ripped of and got a Type 2 or 3 instead of type 4.

If you can shed some light on what lens I've just purchased than it would be a great help

to someone who just got into Leica.

Here is a picture:

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to this forum.

Based on serial number according to this source, you have bought the Summicron 35 Type 4:

Leica M Mount Lens Guide

That is the bokeh king!

Congratulations!

I am looking forward to see some of your pictures on the picture forums.

Thank you very much. I feel a lot better now :) . I come from the world of Canon. I my family was buying cameras from this local dealer as far back as my father's EOS 1 film SLR. Then it was my turn, and I got the 5D and then the 5D mrk II.

Anyways, I'm feeling quite a bit overwhelmed when it comes to Leica, what lens to buy, old or new. It's just not easy. There is no book value that I know of when it comes to classic lenses. I had to sell my beloved 5d mrk II with some of my beloved "L" lenses to fund this purchases. That is why I guess everything is so intimidating.

I look forward in becoming an active member on this forum. Thank you again for taking the time and look at my post :)

Whilst there are several hoods that will fit just IMHO the rectangular one is the way to go.

Marked M2/35 Serial Number 12524. If nothing else searching the net for it will be an education in Leica.

Here we are, a chrome v4 on an M2 ( to aid the learning curve it is an early one, button rewind, and no self timer) :D

I do hope you enjoy your M9 and welcome.

Thank you for all your advice. It really makes me happy to see so many helpful people helping out someone who just got into Leica. I don't know a whole lot so any help is much appreciated. :)

The lens did come with a plastic lens hood. The s/n is 12524 M2/35 Canada. I don't think it original to the lens since it's made in Canada but he told me that it was a gift along with a leather lens pouch from Leica.

The lens is in really good shape, no dust or fungus, just really clean. Here are some pictures. The body of the lens does have a few marks but it ok.

I still don't know if I've over paid for this lens $2100. I originally wanted a 50 Lux but the guy at the store said I should start off with a 35 and this lens. But he told me I can exchange it back any time.

Anyways I'm still wait for my M9 to come in. I'm using a second hand M9 right now given to me by the store to use first.

Thanks again for all your input and information. :D:D:D

If you buy one of the plastic hoods as recommended by Chris, make sure you don't lose the rectangular rubber cover... They're about £20 to replace.

Here we go, welcome to complex Leica :D:D

Andy is partially correct, the hood caps are expensive to replace but the hood I have shown and quoted doesn't have one.

(Should have looked before there would have saved me dragging out the Nikon )

It was superseded by this one, which does.

It will run around £100.

BTW You think this is bad, wait until you ask about a bag

The thing I dislike about the old hood is that I get very paranoid shouldering the camera in bright sunlight without the cap (don't even know if it's possible to get the lens cap on and off with the hood on?)

I've owned the v4 for about six weeks - the first four weeks the lens was away for a focussing adjustment so that it should focus perfectly wide open from 0,7 - infinity (which it didn't do when I bought it).

Now it works perfectly and I really love the size, feel and, of course, the images from this tiny little lens. Congratulations on your purchase!
