sblitz Posted August 31, 2011 Share #101 Posted August 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) there was a rather rip roaring thread a few months back in regard to this point about street photography and people being photographed, etc., got a bit heated as well. do not want to shift the direction of this thread, as i have a 21/35/50/90 and have been thinking about adding a 28mm lens. i love the 50 and 21 but find the 35 a bit too neutral in its point of view, so i have been reading this thread with interest to see if it tilts me one way or the other -- it hasn't yet, more about finances probably. having said all this, i was a bit disturbed about this woman in northern ireland sneaking in a family portrait of a paramilitary man. considering the issues that these people face in regard to revenge against family, i can understand why we wanted no part of his face tied to his family in a picture. whether she agreed with his politics or not, and i am making statement or claim in the arena of the politics of northern ireland, she should have understood that in her quest for "art" she may have put innocents in harms way. i just think that is wrong. Advertisement Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Hi sblitz, Take a look here M9 35mm vs 28mm when you are 50mm shooter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shanghait Posted September 1, 2011 Share #102 Posted September 1, 2011 35 and 28 are completely different lenses.....as is a 50. It should come down to subject matter more than anything. But I think in general most people would still carry a 35-50 combo. I shoot alot of street and people, and always carry a 35+50. Then I go down to a 21 lux when I need to shoot landscape and interiors. I have a 28 cron....but it rarely rarely gets used. Will probably let it go very soon. exile Posted September 1, 2011 Share #103 Posted September 1, 2011 I'm a 50mm guy too. My second lens is either a ZM21/2.8 or a 35/1.2, depending on the subject matter. I pick the second lens based on the likelihood that it will get used frequently enough to justify its weight... having a smooth spread of focal lengths in order to approximate a zoom does not interest me. 35mm and 50mm are each just perfect for many situations, so including both makes a lot of sense. I always use a 35/1.2 and 50/1.5 for weddings and events. On the other hand, I am going on holiday soon and expect to shoot a lot of family shots, landscape, and reportage-style travel photography. I will be hiking in the mountains and minding children on a beach. I will take just a 50/1.5, ZM 21/2.8, polarising filter and a SF24D for fill flash. The 50 and 21mm are both focal lengths that I dearly love, and they are different enough that I do not often have to think about which one I will use for a specific shot. sblitz Posted September 1, 2011 Share #104 Posted September 1, 2011 interesting point, i am about to spend a weekend in charleston, sc and i have been think about what i will carry around with me. i have 21/35/50/90 and am thinking 21/50 at the minimum and maybe the 35 to make it a threesome. can't see the 90 having much value here. if i had a 28, perhaps 28 and 50 would be enough, but i can always crop the corners of the 21 to make it a 28 ... so to speak. exile Posted September 1, 2011 Share #105 Posted September 1, 2011 Certainly you can Sblitz - that is what I did all the time with an M8 and a 21mm!
IkarusJohn Posted September 1, 2011 Share #106 Posted September 1, 2011 I tend not to think purely of focal length. I also think of size, speed and the character a lens brings. Depending on where I'm going and what I'm likely to shoot, a perfect combination for a long trip would be 50 (Noct - if I had one - or Lux), 35 (Lux, if I had one), 28 (Cron) & 21 (lLux). Each is a different size, from huge (the Noct & the 21 Lux), to small (28 Cron). I wouldn't lug them all around all the time, but I would like to have them available. I would leave the 75 Cron behind as the 50 would do the job well enough ... Interesting discussion. Cheers John
dickgrafixstop Posted September 3, 2011 Share #107 Posted September 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I suggest the 28mm. The 28-50-90 combination is hard to beat in a three lens parley. Personally I'd trade them all for a 35-75 combination and if I had to - or could afford to - add a third lens, I 'd add a 24mm or the 21mm from Zeiss. Having said that, I prefer the 35mm as a "normal" lens so it's personally hard to not come down hard in it's favor. If I could only have one lens it would be the 35, probably the summicron for cost factors.
Paul Verrips Posted September 3, 2011 Share #108 Posted September 3, 2011 50 is my favorite lens, 35 is my second favorite for street and 28 is my second favorite for landscape. 28 is to wide for street, 35 could be usefull in landscape.
