Hi, All:)

If you're a proud owner of the latest 50/1.4 Summilux Asph, please share your opinions.

By googling (I found several posts at www) it seems like the black versions of this lens have "stiff focus" issue. What do you think?

Is this issue equally apply to swummicron 50/2.0 Asph too?

All chrome lenses are better than black ones - less focus issues, less focus shift, less CA, less flare, you name it.:D

Don't you believe it - it is our charming little way of telling the world we like our lenses. The only difference is that the feel is slightly smoother because of the greater weight.

This is a logical exercise: (a) Some early specimens had stiff focusing – including mine. (B) All early specimens were black – chrome finish came in later. © Black specimens have stiff focusing. Right?

Right! But after © insert either some or all, and see which of the propositions ring true.

The focusing helicals in both (outwardly) black lenses and in (outwardly) chrome lenses are made of the same materials – brass on aluminum – and in the same way. We have been over this piece of urban legend several times in the past. The surface finish says nothing about either mechanical or optical performance.

Next legend? "Red Porsche 611 cars are faster than black 611's."

Though you wouldn't deny that a silver-chrome M9-P makes the more professional photos than a steel-grey M9, would you?

The same was true for the black paint M2, which was much more professional than the silver-chrome.

I have a silver/chrome ASPH.

Love it, looks, feels and behaves majestically. It looks like a £2400 lens and mine is quite loose but was a little sticky when I got my hands on it.

My opinion is that it looks superb, timeless and one for keeps.

Buy the one you like!! Actually, buy the one you can FIND!!!

Chrome is a little heavier and shiny.

Black is a little lighter and, well black.

it's @ £2,399

I usually buy Leica glass from harrisoncameras. from my searching, they are cheapest.

I have to double check with them whether it's available for next day delivery.

I know I can't wait one to arrive.

It'd be silly me but unsure yet of color.

My two other lenses are black, so with 50mm I probably go for silver.

Thanks !

I have the silver version and the only "problem" is the weight that I suppose greater than the black version. For anything else is totally ok, smoot focus, sharpness and no focus shift.

Well, I didn't claim that chrome-plated lenses are actually worse mechanichally or optically than the black lenses, did I? Just that they aren't any better.

Lars, I'm sure that beside weight there must be no other difference in the two models. I had a black sample in my hands, however, and the difference in weight is quite relevant. Enough to represent an issue when choosing between the two versions.

If I could switch to a black one I think I would.
