it seems to me to be crucial to know why, for example, jaapv's 17.30 post does not appear in the thread on my machine but does appear in the Topic Review. The same applies to many but not all of my own posts. What distinguishes the posts that appear in the thread from those that only appear in the Topic Review? So far as my own posts are concerned, I can see no difference.

Alwyn - a couple of thoughts on your difficulties:

1 - don't give up. Someone will be able to unravel the mysteries. So far, you're doing fine.

2- The forum's software has been designed to be used with an "ordinary" computer, i.e. one equipped with a keyboard and a mouse. Some of your difficulties might arise from the fact that you're trying to master the use of that software under circumstances it was not designed to cope with. On the iPad, you might see only parts of the page the forum tries to show. Navigating in a manner that makes all relevant parts of the page visible is quite bit harder on the iPad than it is on a notebook computer. Also, some of the "controls" (things your are supposed to click on" are rather hard to hit. Even worse, while the mouse user is given hints as to the supposed function of those controls, the iPad user is denied that comfort.

To cut a long story short: until you feel more comfortable using the forum and its controls, I suggest using the macBook (or any laptop or desktop computer) rather than the iPad.

3 - Near the top of each page which holds the indivual posts (or messages) of a thread, there are two controls which might have some bearing on your inability to see some (but not all) posts:

One is labelled Display Modes. When clicked on, it displays a list of "Modes" or "Settings". For your level of knowledge, "Switch to Linear Mode" appears to be the best option.

Immediately above that option, there's a series of page numbers, in this case "Page 1 of 2; 1;2;>" or similar. use those controls to advance to a particular page. Those controls might be very hard to hit on the iPad. I used to play the piano; nonetheless, I mostly hit the wrong page number unless I magnify the iPad's display rather grossly.

4. The topic of "caching" has been mentioned several times. "Caching" refers to the technique employed by most browsers that they keep a page (and elements found on the page) in memory. Once that page is in memory, the browser does not fetch it again from the server which sent the original page until it (the browser) is convinced that it is obsolete. Hence it is would be possible for your browser to show a page of a thread with the newest additions missing for the simple reason that it shows a page which is dated.

It might be worthwhile to check if the clock of your iPad is set to the correct time and time zone. There is an (admittedly slim) possibility that your browser "thinks" that all pages it fetched are still valid for several hours when its clock runs slow.

I am very grateful for all the interest displayed in my problem and all the suggestions for solving it. However, the problem remains. I have checked the display mode and seem to be in linear mode (in black while the other options are in red). Pop's contribution did not appear in the thread but I found it in the Topic Review. The iPad clock is one minute fast - surely not a problem- and I don't have any problems with any of its other functions or with a variety of apps.

Until recently, I used a PC and had no similar problems - although plenty of others - and I have recently switched to Apple in pursuit of an easier life. It's been an unexpectedly fraught period of change with one exception; the switch from PS elements to Lightroom has been a joy.

I found Topic Review by accident by tapping on Post Reply and scrolling down. For me, it has the virtue that it contains posts which do not appear in the thread. I have no idea what its intended function is. It did contain you 9.40 post which the thread did not.

Andy and all the others: suddenly, everything seems to have sorted itself. I don't know why nor do I know what I may have done but all the missing posts have appeared in this thread and others. Topic Review is still there but I hope to no longer need it. I remain very grateful for all the helpful interest that has been shown by forum members and it is good to know that both sympathy and advice are so readily available.

I have lots of sympathy for Alwyn as I assume he is probably ok with a PC.I recently changed to apple mac and the things I expected to be difficult where ok.The things that have had me thinking are the more obvious things. For any one thinking of changing to mac,buy a years one to one training at the apple store.Worth every penny if you are near an apple store. If you are not handy for an apple store plan B is of course "phone a friend"

You must be looking at a different forum from me. I don't see Topic Review anywhere, even when clicking on "Post Reply".

Andy,

Topic Review shows up every time you click on Post Reply. At the reply screen, if you scroll way down, you'll see a list of all the previous posts on the thread, starting with the most recent. This section with all the previous posts on the thread has the heading: Topic Review.
